 | | Library director Mary Lou Carolyn is flanked by children's coordinators Carolyn Thorenz, left, and Christine Adams at this year's Summer Reading Program kick-off. |
All the hard work of children's coordinators Carolyn Thorenz and Christine Adams is paying off - the two have recruited an all-time record high of 307 participants for the Summer Reading Program!
Anyone who's attended Carolyn's or Christine's programs can see how the two of them give it their all - from planning and preparing for their events, to maintaining their good cheer and enthusiasm throughout their long days. Both of them deserve their own SRP prizes for Best Library Spirit.
At this point a lot of the library's summer programming is full, including Story Time. If you're interested in attending something you haven't registered for, however, you can call the library at 895-3707 and leave your name and number. Either Carolyn or Christine will get back to you to let you know whether or not there's room for you to participate.
Remember that the Summer Reading Program ends August 1 with an exciting 6 p.m. finale by Arm of the Sea Theater! |

Books are back at the Newburgh Mall!
Bibliophiles, rejoice! You'll now be able to visit the Newburgh Mall and come away with more than just a slice of pizza and a cheap pair of sneakers!
The Newburgh Free Library has opened a Town Branch at there.
This avant-garde location will offer patrons of RCLS libraries a new frontier of accessibility and convenience. No more backtracking to Barnes and Noble if you're in the mood for a book while you're at the mall - and no more paying for one, either, if B&N's convenient location was luring you away from the library.
The mall opening is considered a pilot project to gauge response to an off-site location. Users will be able to check out books, sign up for library cards, receive help with research and homework projects by using library-funded online tools, and much more.
The summer hours at the Town Branch will be:
- Monday - 10-6
- Tuesday - 12-8
- Wednesday - 12-8
- Thursday - 10-6
- Friday -12-8
- Saturday - 10-3
- Sunday - closed
The phone number at the Town Branch is 566-0460. |

Ten things Amazon wants to keep quiet According to SmartMoney.com, there are some things shoppers should know about the world's largest online retailer.
Among them: 1. The reason why the majority of customer reviews are so positive is that many of the site's reviewers receive free products from publishers, agents, and authors. So you might want to get a second opinion on that mystery debut you were considering.... 2. Though the Kindle Fire was marketed as a less expensive option to the iPad, surveys show the Amazon device is often but a starter tablet, with many consumers moving on to purchase fuller-featured products like the iPad in the long run. 3. Free shipping may be a costly venture for some. Studies have shown the perk encourages customers to make a larger number of impulse buys. For the full article, click on the link above. |

Just in time for the Olympics: Gold Gold, by Chris Cleave
Kate and Zoe met at 19 when they both made the cut for the national training program in track cycling.
Now, at 32, the women are facing their last and biggest race: the 2012 Olympics. Each wants desperately to win gold, and each has more than a medal to lose.
Kate is the more naturally gifted, but the demands of her life - chief among them a sick daughter - have a tendency to slow her down.
Intense, aloof Zoe has always hovered on the periphery of real human companionship, and her compulsive need to win at any cost has more than once threatened her friendship with Kate - and her own sanity.
Echoing the adrenaline-fueled rush of a race around the Velodrome track, Gold is a triumph of superbly paced, heart-in-throat storytelling. With great humanity and glorious prose, Chris Cleave examines the values that lie at the heart of our most intimate relationships, and the choices we make when lives are at stake and everything is on the line. |
