Get ready for summer fun! |
|
Sure, it's only April, but Miss Christine and Miss Carolyn have been hard at work already planning a fantastic Summer Reading Program!
This year's theme will be Dream Big, and that's exactly what our children's coordinators have been doing!
The summer program's kick-off event is set for June 26, when the library will bring an old-fashioned country fair to the front lawn. The evening will feature a family performance from The Little Farm Show, an all-ages musical extravaganza about farming, food, and the environment. Watch as the Magnificent MacDonald Twins take the audience on a whirlwind tour of The Greatest Show on Dirt.
Lego Camp will be in session from July 9 through the 13th. Engineering Fundamentals with Lego will be offered by Play-Well Teknologies, who have been "teaching engineering" to kids for more than six years in the New York Tri-State area. Pre-Engineering, the morning camp for grades K-2, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Engineering FUNdamentals for grades 3-5 will run from 1-4 p.m. The cost of the camp is $120 per person. Space is limited, so call now for details and to reserve your spot!
The library will hold a Lego Build-a-Thon the following week to keep those creative juices flowing.
Make sure you mark Wednesday, Aug. 1, on your calendar, because that's when Arm of the Sea Productions will be bringing their newest performance, the Rejuvenary River Circus, to the library lawn. You won't want to miss this breathtaking performance of larger-than-life puppets as they weave an unforgettable story.
These are just a few of the events being put into place for a summer program designed to fulfill dreams and stoke the imagination with a touch of mystery, fun, and surprise!

Weather observers wanted to track precip
Ever wanted to try your hand at meteorology? Now's your chance!
CoCoRaHS stands for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network. It's a nonprofit network of individual and family volunteers of all ages who take daily measurements of rain, hail, and snow in their backyards.
Volunteers use high-quality rain gauges and, in some states, "hail pads" to measure precipitation and study storms. Local training sessions are held to teach new observers how to install their instruments and properly measure rainfall and other precipitation.
If you're interested in spending a few minutes each day measuring and reporting precipitation, CoCoRaHS flyers and a brochure will be available soon at the Wallkill Public Library. |

Imagine revving up your imagination..... Imagine: How Creativity Works by Jonah Lehrer Did you know that the most creative companies have centralized bathrooms? That brainstorming meetings are a terrible idea? That the color blue can help you double your creative output? From the New York Times best-selling author of How We Decide comes a sparkling and revelatory look at the new science of creativity. Shattering the myth of muses, higher powers, even creative "types," Jonah Lehrer demonstrates that creativity is not a single gift possessed by the lucky few. It's a variety of distinct thought processes that we can all learn to use more effectively. You'll learn about Bob Dylan's writing habits and the drug addictions of poets. You'll meet a Manhattan bartender who thinks like a chemist, and an autistic surfer who invented an entirely new surfing move. You'll see why Elizabethan England experienced a creative explosion, and how Pixar's office space is designed to spark the next big leap in animation. Collapsing the layers separating the neuron from the finished symphony, Imagine reveals the deep inventiveness of the human mind, and its essential role in our increasingly complex world. |

Grammar....the not-quite-lost art If you think texting and email emoticons have rendered proper grammar obsolete....well, you're probably right.
But it's not dead yet! And if you're still interested in keeping on top of the rules and correct usages (who vs. whom, lie vs. lay, etc.), Grammar Girl is the site for you! Writing a proposal for work or a paper for school? Stuck on whether it's "two weeks notice" or "two weeks' notice"? Pay Grammar Girl a visit for a quick answer (and an in-depth explanation as well, if you're interested). The very fact that sites like Grammar Girl exist is somehow hopeful. And by the way, it's "two weeks' notice";-) |
