Wallkill Public Library
A letter from the director
As we begin this new year, there are many great plans in store for all of our Wallkill Public Library friends. Our goal is to make this a remarkable year! In Eastern philosophy, this is the Year of the Dragon, and the dragons are said to be deliverers of good fortune. A perfect way to symbolize our vision for 2012. We are creating an exciting annual calendar of events for patrons of all ages. We'll be asking you several times throughout the year for your feedback, and especially your ideas for helping make ours the greatest little library in the Hudson Valley. Keep a lookout in this section each week. You will find updates on our plans, exhibits, and activities. This location will also provide links to quick surveys we'll conduct as we ask for your candid feedback to enhance and improve our services and collections. As always, please contact me anytime, by phone or email, if you have something to share.

Be well,
Mary Lou (mcarolan@rcls.org
Check here for Books Alive! updates

Each week, while the Books Alive! children's theatre project is underway, we'll provide you with the latest news and information about the play practices and performance. It will all be here in the weekly newsletter - so keep a lookout every Friday for us!

According to writer/director Adrienne Perine, the seventh season of Books Alive! has been very well received. As of earlier in the week, there were 25 participants between the ages of 7 and 10 in the Wednesday group and 10 kids ages 10-13 in the Tuesday sessions. Registration for the younger age group is now closed.

This year one of the program's original students, Emily Landsman, is not only participating in the senior group, but assisting with the junior one. Composer Barbara Ganin is back, as well, hard at work developing songs to enhance the show's dramatic pieces.

This season's title is Fractured, and will feature scenes, monologs, and music that reflect unusual ways of looking at fairy tales.

The senior actors from this year's program have a new challenge - they will be performing monologs from the show three times throughout the day of Jan. 22 at HiHo Home Market. Be sure to show your community support and visit the market at Route 44/55 in Gardiner that day - the performances are schedule for 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m., and 3:15 p.m. Owner Heidi Hill-Haddard has dedicated January as book month and is excited to be able to provide an interesting venue for our young actors.

Young artists needed for theatre project
If you or someone you know is an aspiring artist between the ages of 8 and 13, the directors of Books Alive! children's theater project want you!

Fifteen students are being sought to create unique fairy tale characters that will be infused into a media presentation of this season's Books Alive! play, Fractured.

Those interested can get an admission form at the main desk of the library, along with a copy of the tale Lighting the Way. Applicants will create a sketch based on the tale and submit their entries by Jan. 16 at the library to be eligible for selection. Winners will be chosen based on their skill and unique interpretations. Their art work will go on display in the bank, be photographed for a 2013 calendar, and be auctioned off in the spring.

Those selected will receive six free drawing/painting workshops from Story Book Farm School's Marion Suarez-Schenck. Those will be offered Mondays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. Jan. 23-Feb. 9 in the community room of the Town Hall. Good luck to all!

We appreciate all your support!
The Pepsi Refresh Project is officially over, and, unfortunately, due to lack of votes the Wallkill Public Library didn't receive the $50,000 grant we would have put toward after-school programming.
Nonetheless, great programming is still possible no matter what an institution's financial constraints, as Miss Christine and Miss Carolyn continue to prove on a weekly basis with their fantastic events and workshops.
Those who are curious about the outcome of last month's contest can visit the Refresh Project's website for a list of finalists.
Thanks to all who voted for the library during December - your support is priceless!!

Together Program inspires "Book Talk"

Based on this past fall's popular Together Program, wherein young people and their parents gathered to analyze and discuss the books they'd read together, Book Talk will be a club for ages 9-11 and their parents.

Together Program participants as well as new members are invited for a brainstorming session from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in the Children's Room of the library. Here we'll critique what worked well and what could be changed about this type of book club. We'll also discuss future meeting dates and times, food, and childcare issues.

For more information, please call Mary Lou Carolan, director of the library, at 895-3707.

Robolibrarian to get a voice makeover
  • Ed Rubinstein, longtime patron and father of two, will fill an unfinished term on the library's Board of Directors until the September election. Welcome, Ed!
  • Tax forms are on the way! They've been ordered and should arrive any day now. If there's a form you need that we didn't receive, we'll happily download it and print it out for you at no cost. The lengthier instruction booklets, however, will cost $5 per printout, to offset the price of toner and paper.
  • You should once again be receiving email notices warning you of items that are coming due soon. These emails had been temporarily suspended while a couple of bugs were worked out of the system, but they have since resumed.
  • And for those who don't like the new automated phone messages alerting you to items available for pickup, our apologies. The robovoice will be personalized soon.....
Goodbye to a dear friend

The library was saddened to hear of the news of longtime patron Bill Warren's passing on New Year's Day.

Bill was a wonderful man and a familiar face at Wallkill Public Library. He faithfully brought his two granddaughters to Story Time in the Children's Room for a number of years. He'll be sorely missed. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

Website of the week....

Fact Monster is a free reference site for students, teachers, and parents. It provides kids with homework help as well as answers to questions about geography, world and US history, and more. It also offers an online dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, and almanac, tons of educational games, pop culture trivia, and much more.

For the grownups, Fact Monster offers parenting articles, tools, and advice, as well as loads of resources for teachers. In a world where kids are all too often susceptible to trouble of one sort or another in cyberspace, Fact Monster is a fabulous reminder of what a great place the Web can be!
