Wallkill Public Library

Cast your vote for great kids' programming now!

The Wallkill Public Library is in the running for a $50,000 grant for after-school programming from the Pepsi Refresh Project! But we need your help to win what would be a phenomenal opportunity for our children and the community:

Library programs typically draw huge crowds in Wallkill.....

Go to www.refresheverything.com, click on Arts and Music, then click on the $50,000 icon, find the Wallkill Public Library Project (it's on a purple tab that reads "Vibrant after school arts, music, language, and cultural program"), and cast your vote!!

Vote for this incredible opportunity online, text it, Facebook it to friends...anything you can do each day until Dec. 30 will help us win. Only ten grants of this size will be awarded, so every vote counts!

The Pepsi Refresh Project was created in 2010, when executives at PepsiCo decided to spend less money advertising and instead invest in individual communities. They created the Refresh Project, inviting consumers to submit applications and vote for the most promising ideas. Pepsi funds the most popular programs.

With your help, we can offer our community's kids some stupendous programming! Thanks for your support!

Library raffle winner pays it forward

Last year, Lottie Seven won a Wallkill Public Library raffle for a holiday dinner. But instead of doing what most of us would do (i.e., kick back, have some drinks, and stuff ourselves like turduckens), Lottie organized a free Christmas dinner for children and their parents in and around the hamlet who are going through some tough times and need a little special holiday cheer.

She's turning the dinner into an annual event - this year's Christmas Cheer for the Children will be held at 4 p.m. Dec. 17 at Wallkill Reformed Church.

There is a box at the front entrance of the library for new toys and toiletries (gifts for children and adults) that will go toward this event.

Anyone interested in helping wrap presents Dec. 16 can call Lottie at 391-1701 or Kayla at 857-7693. You should also give them a call if you'd like to bring water, juice, or a dish or baked good to the dinner.

Thank you in advance for your help, and many thanks to Lottie and her friends for being the true embodiment of holiday spirit!

Farewell to a great friend

Staff and friends of the Wallkill Public Library were saddened this week by the news of longtime Assemblyman Thomas Kirwan's death.

The lifelong Newburgh resident, who represented the 100th Assembly District (which includes Shawangunk), was an ardent supporter of the library. Not only did he provide special legislative grant funds, which enabled us to make improvements on the building and enhance our children's programming, but he himself took the time to attend many of our events.

Kirwan was 78.

This week at the library.....
Season seven of Books Alive! starts soon! There will be two informational sessions for those ages 8-14 who are interested in participating in the children's theatre project and their parents this coming week - one from 4-5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, and the other from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8. You need not attend both!
Bring your kindergartner back for a trip down Memory Lane with Kindergarten Story Time, which will take place from 4-4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6.
The Afterschool Art Workshop and Young Art Club will be held Wednesday, Dec. 7, from 3-3:45 p.m. and 4-4:45 p.m., respectively. Don't forget, we're getting ready for the big Art Show on Dec. 21!!
Children ages 5 and up are welcome to be dropped off for holiday Gift Making from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10. A $5 fee is required at the time you register (which you should do soon, because space is limited!).
And don't forget about Let's Play, Imagination Playstation, and the various Story Times we offer throughout the week! Call the library at 895-3707 for more information.
Find out how the tax cap will affect you

For those who missed this week's meeting at the high school regarding the impact the 2 percent tax cap will have on the school budget and programs, two other meetings are planned for early December.

A 7 p.m. meeting at Plattekill Elementary School will take place Dec. 6. There will also be a meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at Leptondale Elementary.

Although the new law has been referred to as a "2 percent tax cap," it does not in fact restrict any proposed tax levy increase to 2 percent. The law does, however, require at least 60 percent voter approval for a school budget if the proposed levy increase exceeds a certain amount.

That amount is called the "tax levy limit" and is determined by each district.

Those with questions or in need of contact information should check out the  Wallkill Central School District's website.
