Wallkill Public Library
We're thankful for you!
We hope everyone out there has a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Though the library is closing at 5 p.m. Wednesday and will remain closed for the holiday Thursday, we hope to see you at some of the activities we have  planned throughout the rest of the week:
  • Tuesday Mommy & Me starts at 10:30 a.m. and Let's Play begins at 1 p.m.
  • Wednesday is a busy day at the library, starting with Toddler Story Time at 10:30 a.m. and Book Buddies at 1 p.m. Later that afternoon, the Afterschool Art Workshop takes place from 3-3:45 p.m., followed by the Young Art Workshop, which starts at 4 p.m.
  • The day after Thanksgiving is Game and Puzzle Friday! Join us from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and choose from our selection of activities you can enjoy alone or with your friends. A special Family Story Time will be offered at 10:30 a.m., and at 11:30 a.m. we'll be offering a Shel Silverstein Story Time, featuring poems from the beloved children's author.
  • Stay tuned to future emails, because December is jam-packed with activities for every age, including a Gift Making Party for ages 5 and up, which will be offered Saturday, Dec. 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Drop the kids off and let them make their own gifts for the ones they love. Snacks and gift wrapping will be provided. Space is limited, so registration is required. There is also a $5 fee for this event, in order to cover the materials provided.
Good news for the visually impaired
Though losing your sight or acuity of vision is devastating, there are more options than ever for those who fear their impairment will limit the availability of books and other print material.
The National Federation for the Blind's NFB-Newsline offers the blind and visually impaired a choice of more than 300 newspapers and magazines that can be accessed via the Web, a touch-tone telephone, or by download to a digital talking book player or MP3 player. The service also offers feeds from wire services such as The Associated Press and United Press International, TV listings, grocery ads, and more.
Patrons of a Talking Book Library can contact their libraries to sign up for the NFB-Newsline over the phone. Others can visit the NFB's website to fill out an application or download one and mail it in, or call the NFB at (866)504-7300. Remember NFB-Newsline is FREE.
Radio listeners should also keep in mind that WMHT offers a 24-hour radio information service for the blind and print disabled called RISE. Each week, the station's dedicated team of volunteers read articles from local and national papers, popular periodicals, and books. For more information, visit WMHT online.
Reconnect with community in December
What better time of the year is there to forge new bonds (or reestablish old ones) than the holiday season? This coming month offers plenty of opportunities to do so, starting with Shawangunk's annual Christmas Tree Lighting Festival at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4. Gather at the Town Hall for carols, music, refreshments, and a visit from Santa!
The library is once again offering entrepreneurs throughout Wallkill the opportunity to collaborate in a venture to build your business as well as our community. In an effort to encourage library patrons to shop and dine locally this holiday season, the library is promoting a holiday discount offer that would allow patrons to receive special deals
just by showing their library or key card at local stores and restaurants.
The choice of the discount would be the business owner's, and the library would promote the special offer to our 2,500 patrons via our weekly newsletter, flyers, our website, and on Channel 23. Those interested can contact Mary Lou Carolan at 895-3707 or [email protected].

Books Alive! returns for 7th season

Books Alive!, the children's theatre project for ages 8 to 14, is fast approaching. Play practices will begin Tuesday, Jan. 3 (for ages 8 to 10) and Wednesday, Jan. 4 (for 11- to 14-year-olds), and will run from 3:30-5:30 p.m. The performance is scheduled for Saturday, March 10.
Directors Adrienne and James Perine will meet with parents and kids for informational sessions Monday, Dec. 5, from 4-5 p.m. or Thursday, Dec. 8, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Children's Room of the library. This year's performance will be a student-written and produced production of fractured fairy tales.
Att: Nookworms and Kindle fans!
If you've been thinking about updating your personal library with your own e-reader, now's your chance!
The Friends of the Wallkill Public Library are raffling off a Kindle and a Nook Dec. 12. Pick up your tickets today at the library - they're $10 for four, or $3 for one. Both the Kindle and the Nook feature built-in Wi-Fi, adjustable text sizes, and easy access to the books you love (including library eBooks)! Good luck!
Your patience is appreciated!

Come early December, the library will be using two different computer systems.

Aquabrowser, the library's electronic catalog, will be replaced by a new system called Enterprise. Due to this switch, patrons will be unable to place holds on material from Dec. 5 through the 7th. During this period, if there's an item you'd like to request, feel free to let our staff know so we can process your request once we're able.

Library staff will also be working with a different program behind the circulation desk beginning Dec. 8. Please bear with us while we work to familiarize ourselves with this new system. We're working to make the transition as smooth as possible, and we thank you in advance for your understanding!
