Wallkill Public Library
You could get a Nook for $3!
Just in time for the holidays, the Friends of the Wallkill Public Library are raffling off the Nook Simple Touch and the Amazon Kindle! Tickets are $3 for one and $10 for four and can be purchased at the circulation desk of the library. The drawing will be Dec. 12.
For a sneak peek at the models we're raffling, visit Amazon's website for the Kindle and Barnes and Noble's site for the Nook Simple Touch.
Here's a tip for those who already own a Kindle - if your library ebook's due soon and you're not close to finishing it, turn off the wireless connection on your device. The title you're reading won't expire until you reactivate the connection, thereby allowing you an extension (of sorts) on your due date!
New circulation system coming soon

The library will begin using a new circulation system to handle patron transactions starting Dec. 8. Beginning that day, there will be a new catalog system in place for patrons, as well. In preparation for this switch, the electronic catalog will be inaccessible Dec. 5, 6, and 7. This means patrons will be unable to place holds on items from home or at the library.
Please bear with us as we familiarize ourselves with this new software. The key features of the system should appeal to everyone and will include the option of keeping checkout histories on a patron's record (as opposed to now, when they're automatically deleted) and the availability of PayPal, which will allow patrons to pay their fines with a credit card via their home computers (or the library's public access computers) if they prefer to do so.
We apologize in advance for any inconveniences this transition will cause. Your patience is much appreciated!
Secret Series now available

Fans of Pseudonymous Bosch's wildly popular children's series can now pick up the following at the Wallkill Public Library:
  • Book 1 - The Name of This Book is Secret - When adventurous detectives Cass and Max-Ernest discover a box filled with smelly vials of colorful ingredients, they accidentally stumble upon a mystery surrounding a dead magician's hidden diary and the hunt for immortality.
  • Book 2 - If You're Reading This, It's Too Late - In their ongoing fight against the evil Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais, our heroes stumble upon the Museum of Magic, where they finally meet the amazing Pietro.
  • Book 3 - This Book is Not Good for You - Cass's mom has been kidnapped by the sinister chocolatier Senor Hugo! Can Cass and Max-Ernest discover the evil ingredient before it's too late?
  • Book 4 - This Isn't What It Looks Like - Cass may be in grave danger. She's eaten the dreaded Time Travel Chocolate. Now not only can't she leave the past behind, but it appears she's literally stuck in it. Meanwhile, Max-Ernest is worried for his best friend. Can our expert hypochondriac diagnose Cass's condition before it's too late?
  • Book 5 - You Have to Stop This - A class trip to the local natural history museum turns dangerous, or perhaps deadly, when Cass accidentally breaks a finger off a priceless mummy. Forced to atone for this "crime" of vandalism, Cass and her friends go to work for the mummy exhibit's curator, only to be blamed when tragedy strikes...

Coming up at Wallkill Public Library....

The library kicks off its annual Food for Fines program Monday. From then through the 21st, bring in donations such as canned goods, cookies, stuffing, instant potatoes, yams, and other non-perishables in exchange for eliminating whatever fines you may have incurred. We'll donate the items to Wallkill Reformed Church's food pantry, just in time for the holiday! Please make sure your donations are not outdated or damaged. Thanks for your support!

Important information for veterans

According to an article published in the November edition of the AARP Bulletin, the National Association of Atomic Veterans is searching for thousands of vets exposed to radiation from nuclear tests conducted between 1945 and 1962 or as part of the occupation forces at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Those eligible could receive a $75,000 benefit from the government. Widows and children are eligible as well. Call 1-800-729-7327 for more information.
The library will be open on Veterans Day. We want to send out a special thank you to all our vets for your sacrifices!
Sick of shopping? Visit us!
For those who prefer to escape the insanity of Black Friday, the 25th is Game and Puzzle Day at the library. Come between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and play your game (or solve your puzzle) of choice. There will also be a 10:30 a.m. Family Story Time and craft that day, as well as a special 11:30 a.m. Shel Silverstein Story Time, recommended for ages 5 and up, featuring poems from Every Thing On It, the beloved author's posthumously published collection of brand-new poems. Invent your own poetry and art to go with it!
The library will be closing at 5 p.m. on the 23rd, and will remain closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.
FEMA extends disaster relief deadlines
The deadline to apply for disaster assistance for damages resulting from Tropical Storms Irene and Lee has been extended by FEMA. Applicants now have until Dec. 15 to seek assistance. To register, call 1-800-621-3362, or apply at www.DisasterAssistance.gov. You should have your insurance information, social security number, and a description of your damaged property on hand when you call. Those who apply will be given a FEMA application number. Make sure to write the number down and save it for future reference, as you'll need it whenever you contact FEMA. Good luck to all.
