Library offers thrills, chills for Halloween!


Looking for a good scare to get your kids in the trick-or-treating mood? Or would you prefer a tamer time with crafts or a good book? No matter your choice, the Wallkill Public Library has an activity for you:

  • Saturday - Christine's Card-Making Workshop for Adults will give you the tips and techniques to create your own beautiful handmade cards for all occasions! You'll create two gift tags and two greeting cards with coordinating envelopes during the 7 p.m. workshop at the library.
  • Tuesday - Bring your little readers to the Magic Tree House Book Club from 4-4:45 p.m., where fans ages 5-7 will be discussing Dinosaurs Before Dark, the first in the popular children's series by Mary Pope Osborne. Whether your child has read that particular book or not, they're sure to enjoy the company of their fellow fine literature connoisseurs and the crafts and activities of the day!  
  • Also Tuesday, children ages 3-4 are invited to come to Let's Play from 1-1:30 p.m., where each week a new activity is featured! Board games, crafts, chalk, and Play Doh are just a few of the diversions that will help your tot kick back and relax... 
  • Wednesday - Two different art workshops offer the chance to get creative in a variety of mediums for separate age groups. Both workshops feature sketch, print-making, sculpture and paint. The Afterschool Art Workshop, for ages 12-15, takes place from 3-3:45 p.m. at the library. The Young Artist Club is geared toward ages 8-11 and goes from 4-4:45 p.m. Come let your artists express themselves!
  • Thursday - The Imagination Playstation is the perfect way for your 5- to 7-year-old to unwind after the rigors of a regimented school day. Join us from 4:30-5:15 p.m. and enjoy a different project, game, or activity each week - from making your own slime, to creating your own lava lamp, to sculpting with Play Doh. This week we'll be playing Halloween games!
  • This Thursday only - Scary Story Time promises to be a scream of an evening for ages 7 and up! Get into the Halloween spirit with a tale of terror that's not for the faint of heart....see what happens at the library when the lights go out! The haunting starts at 6:30 p.m.
  • Friday - Give your children something fun and constructive to occupy them after their half-day of school with Craft Time, from 2-3 p.m.
  • Saturday - Shawangunk's annual Community Halloween Festival kicks off with a costume parade and continues on the library lawn with ghoulish games, hayrides, live music, and more! Tickets for free hot dogs will be available to all children in costumes.

Two appointed positions on the library's Board of Trustees are currently vacant. Both are for unfinished terms lasting until September 2012. The Friends' Used Book Shop is looking for a co-coordinator to help with supervising and scheduling the volunteers at the store. If you enjoy meeting new people and would like to help out, contact Paulette Snyder at 516-238-2342.
Brush up on your computer skills! 
 
There are only a couple of spaces left for Merle Bercow's Introduction to Computers/Computing Basics class for adults!
The course runs from 9-10 a.m. Tuesdays for a period of four to five weeks, depending on the needs of the class.
Some of the topics covered during the class include various types of software, file management, and navigating the Internet. If you're interested, give the library a call at 895-3707 or give your name and number to a staff member at the circulation desk next time you're in. 
For book lovers young and old(er).... 

  Interested in an early holiday gift for the reader in your life? The 2012 Book Lovers' Calendar offers a new recommendation for an absorbing page-turner each day of the year, such as:

  • The best thriller you've never heard of: Mark Mills's The Savage Garden
  • Vanished Smile, R.A. Scotti's fascinating true story of the theft of the Mona Lisa
  • All the Living, C.E. Morgan's lyrical debut novel exploring love and bereavement

The calendars are $10 each and available through the Ramapo Catskill Library System. Once ordered, they'll be delivered to the library of your choice for you to pick up.

 

For those younger readers out there, TumbleBooks can be accessed through Wallkill Public Library's website.The online collection of animated, talking picture books teaches kids the joys of reading in a format they'll love. Narration, sound, music, and animation is added to existing picture books kids can read or have read to them. Puzzles and games accompany each book to reinforce the concepts of reading. Check it out today!

The ongoing Together Program continues to be a success for all 23 participants involved! Parents and kids are discovering the joys of spending true quality time together reading, discussing, and analyzing the books selected for the program. Thank you to all who signed up!
