A Fond Farewell for Church Hindes |
VNA's CEO J. Churchill Hindes was honored in two separate events in June as a celebration of his 13 years of leadership. Church Hindes is stepping down in mid-July.
On June 14, VNA friends and community members set sail on the M/V Champlain Ferry for a celebration party. Festivities included entertainment by the Retro Rockets and hors d'oeuvres from Dish Catering. The program included gifts and speeches from past and present board members, incoming CEO Judy Peterson and from Church himself.
A week later, on June 21, Church's friends, family and VNA staff members gathered under a tent outside the VNA to honor Church for his leadership as CEO for the VNA. Along with an enjoyable barbecue dinner, Church was treated to many tributes and gifts, including serenades by the Hinesburg Community Band, the VNA Kazoo Band and the VNA Family Singers. The event culminated with cool ice cream treats from Mr. (and Mrs.) Ding-a-Ling.
Hindes expressed that leaving the VNA is bittersweet and hopes his legacy "...includes a deep identity with the mission and never taking for granted what it takes to do the work of our agency, an undying appreciation for the skills and dedication of our staff and the optimistic, "can do" spirit that has brought us through some of the most challenging times in the history of home care."
Judy Peterson will take over the helm on July 16. A life-long Vermonter, Judy obtained her nursing degree from the University of Vermont and is currently the President and CEO of Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice in Berlin, VT.
"I am thrilled to have been selected as the CEO of such a fine organization. I am deeply committed to the not-for-profit VNA mission and am looking forward to working with the dedicated staff of the VNA of Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties to further this mission," says Peterson. "Health Care Reform efforts focus on improving quality while controlling costs. This is exactly what the Vermont VNA system does. Now is the time to advance these valuable home care and hospice services. I feel fortunate to be able to participate in this movement as the leader of an organization like the VNA of Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties." |
Alzheimer's Association Speaks with VNA Dementia Support Group Leader on CCTV |
VNA's Wendy Bombard, RN, was a guest on CCTV's series, All About Alzheimer's, which aired on June 21. The focus of the show was to explain the importance of support groups for those living with Alzheimer's or dementia. Support groups provide a safe, confidential place for those on the journey of providing care to a person with dementia. Participants learn, listen, share, obtain, and provide emotional support. Families and individuals learn coping skills, hear about resources, receive education, and support one another.
The VNA Support Group is for both caregivers and for persons living with dementia. The family enjoys a light dinner together and shares information affecting both with an opportunity to then go into separate, professionally-led groups. The benefit to the individual with early and mid-state dementia is that they learn about expected changes, feel less alone, and know where to find help and support. The caregiver is given the freedom to know that their loved one is with them.
The program will replay on Channel 17/Town Meeting Television, on Comcast Cable and Burlington Telecom, at 6 pm on Saturday, July 7. For air time information or to watch the show online, click here.
