It's That Time Again
It's that time of year when we all come back from summer activities to prepare for the beginning of fall. It's a time when we settle back into a rhythm of our community life. The choir returns in full force (with many thanks to the "summer choir," who did a wonderful job), Christian formation begins anew (you will find several opportunities in this newsletter for adults and children alike) and we welcome new people who have come during the summer. I'm excited by the large number of new people this summer and I hope you old-comers will make them feel right at home. Plans are already being made for the blessing of the animals, an Advent program and Christmas, believe it or not! So, welcome everyone to this new but rather familiar rhythm of gathering and sharing our life together.

Welcoming Hearts Ministry Opportunity
Welcoming Hearts is a new ministry opportunity available during the 10:00am service. Welcoming Hearts was the name of the fundraising opportunity to make our church more accessible to those with physical challenges. An extension of that program involves assisting those parishioners that are differently abled at our Sunday services. The Welcoming Hearts ushers will be responsible for assistance in seating 10-15 minutes prior to the service, and being available to help during communion. This is a much needed ministry, so please consider giving your time to help. If enough volunteers respond, the commitment will be approximately once per month. Please contact Brenda diZerega at 303-776-6651 if you are interested in this special opportunity.

Choirs Resume
Choir rehearsals will be resuming during the month of September. The Sanctuary Choir has resumed rehearsals on Thursday evenings at 7:00pm. We are always welcoming of new members, and we have a great group of people that enjoy singing. We will be learning anthems for Sunday services, and be working on music for Lessons & Carols in December. Adult Handbell rehearsals will resume on September 9th. Adult Handbell rehearsals take place on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. Finally, Youth Choir practices the 3rd Sunday of each month with our first rehearsal taking place on September 16th. The Youth Handbell Choir will resume rehearsals on October 7th. If you are interested in participating in any of these ensembles, please contact Brenda diZerega at 303-776-6651 or bpdizerega@comcast.net.

Blessing of the Animals
Join all the animals (2- and 4-legged) Sunday, October 7th at 10:00 on the west lawn of the Church for the St. Francis Day blessing of the animals. Please bring your pet(s) on a leash or in a carrier and we will celebrate the gift of all creatures great and small by singing special songs and asking God's blessing on all of God's creatures. Treats will be available for all.

KIDS HOPE USA
The 2012 school year has begun and the need for volunteers for Kids Hope USA is greater than ever. Our partnership with Burlington Elementary School has been going for 11 years and I would love to have new mentors, prayer partners, and substitutes! The training is brief and the commitment is for one hour a week during the school year. The attention and affection that the students receive is invaluable. We currently meet on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 3PM-4PM but other times are available. If you feel called to this critical ministry or would like more information, please contact Meghan O'Brien-Marks at (970) 690-0865 or (303) 776-1072.

Re-Visioning Outreach at St. Stephen's -
Come One, Come All!!
Food, Fellowship and Discussion!!
Sunday, September 23 at 11:30am
Please join Father Max on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 11:30am in the conference room for food, fellowship and discussion about the future course of outreach activities at St. Stephen's. This will be the first step in a process of identifying needs within our community that could be helped by the volunteer efforts of our parishioners. If and when we identify local needs and the ways that the people of St. Stephen's might help, the next step will be to organize ourselves to step out in faith
and do something!
Many of us are committed to causes and organizations that we support privately. This is a chance to bring these to the attention to the broader church family. We'd love to learn about the ways you reach out to those in need. Please come to this meeting and share your passion with us. And if you're someone who has always wanted to volunteer but didn't know how to get involved,
this meeting is for you!
A light lunch will be provided. Hope to see you on September 23 at 11:30am. Call Ann Jennings at 303-678-9723 with questions.

St. Stephen's 1881 Legacy Society
Thank you to all who became Founder Members of St. Stephen's 1881 Legacy Society. Founder members were so designated because they made commitments to the Legacy Society in the first twelve months of its existence. In recognition of your efforts, a plaque listing the founders has been placed on the door of the original church.
Stop by Boone Hall to see it.
The door has another plaque that will be used to recognize future members. This is a good time for all to consider remembering St. Stephen's in their estates. For information on how to join, please contact Doug Cummings, Carol Ziegenhagen, Mark Turner, Chuck Cooprider or Kathy Fetzer.
Again, thank you to our founder members.

Adult Piano Class
I would like to organize a group class for adults that are interested in learning how to play the piano. I have recently started teaching the Simply Music method for piano, and the approach to learning music is revolutionary. You can find out more about this program by visiting www.SimplyMusic.com. The class is open to adults who have had previous or no experience playing the piano. Please contact me at 303-776-6651 or bpdizerega@comcast.net if you are interested in more information.

Did You Know?
The rules for handicap parking spaces are designed to give preferred access to people with physical challenges. Handicap parking spaces are designed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines. Although ADA compliance is required, not all handicap parking spaces are the same. Certain spaces are designed for vans which allow passengers in wheelchairs to go down a ramp on one side or the other. Those spaces have access stripes painted on one or both sides. St. Stephens has several handicap parking spaces which allow an accessible path to our church.
Please don't park in a space marked "Van Accessible" unless you have a van that ramps out the side door.
This way, those who specifically need that space can access it on Sundays.

Acolyte Training
Training for all Acolyte positions will be held on September 19 at 7pm in the church.
What's an acolyte? "A person who assists the clergy in conducting the liturgy" - that is, those young people you see up at the front in the stylish off-white robes. This training will be for anyone moving from Server 2 to Server 1, or from Server 1 to Crucifer.
New Acolytes will also be trained at this time. We are always in need new servers, and it is a great way to get involved. Children in the 4th grade or so would be ready.
For more information please contact: Tim Rudden tim.rudden@yahoo.com or Brenda diZerega brenda.dizerega@gmail.com

Blessed to Be a Blessing Welcome back from your summer, St. Stephen's Family! We look forward to another year filled with spiritual grace, fellowship, and loving outreach to our neighbors near and far. We have a lot of new folks attending St. Stephen's. Be sure to greet them, ask them to share their stories, and share yours with them. Remember to wear your name tags, or sign up for one. We Episcopalians say that Stewardship is "Everything I am and everything I have, after I say, 'I believe, Lord." This year's Stewardship theme is "Blessed to Be a Blessing," and the Lectionary's Gospel readings for the Sundays from October 7 through November 11 are from the Gospel of Mark. We will explore together, through the words of guest preachers and through Bible Study between our two services, how God blesses us and how we can be a blessing to others. Please mark your calendars to come to the 9:10-9:50am Bible Studies beginning on October 7 and enrich your understanding of Mark's Gospel. The Gospel Readings will be: Sunday, October 7 Mark 10:2-16 Sunday, October 14 Mark 10:17-31 Sunday, October 21 Mark 10:35-45 Sunday, October 28 Mark 10:46-52 Sunday, November 4 Mark 12:28-34 Sunday, November 11 Mark 12:38-44 God's initiative is always to bless, and that blessing is never earned, it is freely given. Christians primarily know the blessing of God's grace in the gift of our baptism. The Book of Common Prayer tells us that in our baptism the bond that is established cannot be dissolved. We share the same blessing given to Jesus in his baptism: "This is my beloved, in you I'm well pleased." By virtue of our baptism, we are blessed to be a blessing. God blesses what God creates. As the Book of Genesis reminds us, the recital of God's blessing is infused into the created order. Each day of the creation story ends with the refrain: it is good, it is good, it is good. We, too, are part and parcel of the created order, each of us designed for goodness and blessedness. The Hebrew word for blessing is barak, which means "the life force of creation itself," says theologian Walter Brueggemann. Through God's blessing, all of creation is destined for abundant well-being. Through God's blessing, there is always enough. We, in turn, bless God by offering praise and thanksgiving for the goodness of gifts given. To worship God is to offer something of value. We offer praise and thanksgiving not only with our lips, but with our lives. The annual pledge campaign can be an opportunity to bless God and bless the community from the offerings of the labor of our lives. Through our commitment to proportional giving, we offer a pledge of thanksgiving for all we have received and for all we will become as we grow into the image of Christ. | |

CHRISTIAN FORMATION CHALLENGE 2012-13
Welcome Back to Fall!
The Sunday School is in desperate need of volunteers for the 2012-13 school year.
Last year, we had only three volunteers to fill the position of at least ten committed members that are needed to make a good program for our children, the future of our church. If you can remember, we stopped classes in April because neither Kim nor I could do classes at the end of the year, and we had no interest whatsoever, all year, from other people in the congregation. We haven't had VBS in two years!!!
If each member of St. Stephen's who is able to assist volunteers to help out for ONE SUNDAY between September and May, we would have a great program that the children would want to attend on a regular basis. Not all volunteers need to have face to face contact with the children, so talk with me and attend meetings to get a feel for what you can do to help. We need people who have either taught before, have had children of their own, possess a creative talent or passion in teaching our children in becoming Christians, have an interest in being a role model for our younger generation, etc. I am always open to suggestions, and if someone just wants to volunteer for a certain age group for the entire year, that is definitely welcome! Everyone is busy, and everyone spreads themselves thin at church, with most people I know volunteering in at least three different aspects of our community. But, Christian Formation is the future of our church and should be in the forefront of what we are all about.
I am proposing a CHALLENGE TO THE CONGREGATION - GET INVOLVED!!! There will be a sign up in the narthex for the entire year. Pick a weekend that works for you - one in which you are not so busy with other things at church, or one where you will be there anyway so why not teach/assist. Whatever works for YOU.
If the sign ups are not filled in by the first of the month, Christian Formation
CLASSES WILL NOT BE TAKING PLACE THAT MONTH!
So, let's keep the classes going.
Classes will start a little later this year, to give us time to get momentum behind us. We will have a kick-off party on Sunday, September 16th after the 8:00 service. Everyone can bring some brunch food to share and we will have lots of games and activities available for all people that are young at heart. This will be a chance to get to know the teachers and volunteers in the program, as well as to ask questions and sign up.
Hope to see you there!
Tara-lyn Towers - Christian Formation Director
