LoavesAndFishes

July 29th is "Loaves & Fishes" Sunday

Can you help?  O.U.R. cupboards are bare...

Our basket of food that the St. Stephen's volunteers bring to the O.U.R. Center every week is almost empty. July is our month to help the OUR Center.   Do your cupboards hold enough food for our neighbors in need? If so, please remember to bring extra food to church with you on Sunday and leave it in the basket labeled "O.U.R. Center".  We will be accepting donations of food and grocery gift cards throughout July.

O.U.R. Center especially needs the following:

  • Canned food
  • Toilet paper
  • Cereal
  • Pasta and Tomato products
  • Rice and Beans
  • Tuna
  • Diapers
  • Baby food (not mixed varieties)
  • Baby formula
  • Shampoo
  • Bottled Water

Re-Visioning Outreach
at St. Stephen's

St. Stephen's has long been committed to reaching out beyond our walls to be God's hands and feet in service to the community, the diocese, the nation and the world. We were one of the founding churches of the OUR Center, and as long as I've been at St. Stephen's, we've always given of our time and talents, both corporately and individually, to those in need.

During the 20+ years I've been at St. Stephen's, our outreach focus has varied, depending on the needs and interests of our community and our parish. It is Father Max's sense that it is time to re-vision our outreach efforts, in order invigorate, renew and re-focus our commitment to carrying out our call to service.

We will be having a meeting in August in which we will begin the re-visioning process for outreach at St. Stephen's. We need your input and participation in order for this process to capture our collective vision. Please check the August Witness for details about the date and time of this meeting, and plan to join us.

If you have questions on thoughts on this subject, please contact Ann Jennings at 303-678-9723.

Youth Sunday

Youth Sunday & Acolyte Recognition

Since the month of July will have five Sundays, there will be a Youth Service the last Sunday of the month. On July 29th at the 10:00am service, the youth members of our congregation will be reading, chalicing, ushering, and presenting music. If your child or youth is interested in participating, please contact Brenda diZerega at 303-776-6651.

Also, on Sunday, July 29th the acolytes will be recognized for their many hours of service to St. Stephen's. The acolytes will be presented with certificates indicating the hours of service, and some acolytes who have attained Master Acolyte status will be receiving their crosses. Acolyte Recognition will be taking place at both services. Please join us on this special Sunday to acknowledge our youth members and acolytes.

P.S.  Looking for a new opportunity in the ministry?

St. Stephen's Preschool & Childcare -

A WONDERful program

St. Stephen's Preschool exercises a curriculum that engages the imagination and provides challenging experiences through reading, math, art, music, science, physical and social development.  Our childcare program is open from 6:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. Monday - Friday.  We also offer preschool-only classes that operate three hours per day, three days per week. All children who come to St. Stephen's Wonder Kids are included in our Preschool and Pre-K curriculum.  Children who are with us for a full day of child care attend the Preschool or Pre-K classes.

Wildfires:  How to Help

Please keep all of those who have been displaced, who have lost their homes, and who are suffering from anxiety or trouble as a result of the High Park Fire burning west of Fort Collins, and other fires around the state.
Please also pray for all the firefighters and
all those who are supporting them.

Currently Episcopal churches in the
area are supporting first responders through financial donations. If you would like to join them, you can find links to those organizations, and more information about how to help  here. There will surely be ongoing need for assistance in days, weeks and months to come.
We'll pass along word about other
ways to help as we learn more.

Summer Choir

The Summer Choir Schedule for the month of July will be July 8th and 22nd. Come at 9:15 to learn an easy anthem to sing for the service. The summer choir is very informal, and only involves singing an anthem for the offertory - no robes or processions! If you are interested in trying choir, this is an easy way to get acquainted and enjoy singing praises. Please contact Brenda diZerega at 303-776-6651 if you have any questions, or if you would like to participate.

Welcoming Hearts Ministry Opportunity

Welcoming Hearts is a new ministry opportunity available during the 10:00am service. Welcoming Hearts was the name of the fundraising opportunity to make our church more accessible to those with physical challenges. An extension of that program involves assisting those parishioners that are differently abled at our Sunday services. The Welcoming Hearts ushers will be responsible for assistance in seating 10-15 minutes prior to the service, and being available to help during communion.

If enough volunteers respond, the commitment will be approximately once per month. Please contact Brenda diZerega at 303-776-6651 if you are interested in this special opportunity.

Prayer Group Pen Pals in Benin, Africa!

As many of you know, we are trying to establish fellowship and connection between the children of St. Stephen's and the children of Assante, Benin where Christina (Anne's daughter) works for the Peace Corps in Benin, Africa. She lives and works with many mothers and children, a number of whom participate in a Christian church prayer group which meets every Monday. The children  in this group are very excited about this project and have already written and sent us the first packet containing 43 letters and pictures, a few of which  I shared on Sunday at church.

Christina and the children are very eager to receive our responses! We are excited that St. Stephen's has stepped forward to share in this relationship and ideally would like each child to have his or her own "pen pal" relationship with a child from St. Stephen's. Many of you have already signed up and in fact we have already received some letters, thank you!

If your child would like to join us in this unique and fun project and has already signed up,
please plan to join us following the 10:00 service on Sunday, July 1 at 11:15 in Boone Hall to complete our first batch of letters.
Lunch will be provided, as well as paper, pens and drawing material for those who wish to include a picture. As there is a language difference, Christina will translate in both directions.

If your child would like to participate but has NOT signed up,  please contact me ASAP and I will pair your child with an available pen pal. Plan on coming to the Sunday meeting if you can, if not we will work with you to connect your child with their pen pal.

There is plenty of friendship and fellowship to go around, room for everyone, adult or child, who wants to participate! Please join us at our letter writing party and we will get it all figured out! Or talk to me or Anne if you can't make it and we work it out with you.

Acolytes

Acolyte Director Needed

St. Stephen's is in need of a new Acolyte Director.  This ministry involves teaching & training our youth, oversight of the acolyte ministry program and director training.  The scheduling is done by Brenda diZerega.  Requirements are: At least six months membership at St. Stephen's, certification of "Safeguarding God's Children," and approval by the Rector.

As Steve Worland retires from the acolyte ministry, I would to take this opportunity to thank him for his dedicated service. Steve brought new excitement to the ministry and helped us get new, more contemporary robes with colorful cinctures (ropes), as well as cleaning up the acolyte area and training our youth. Thanks, Steve, for your service - and Lori too!  Brenda diZerega has offered to fill in until we find another person to take over this important ministry.

If you are interested in the acolyte ministry please let Fr. Max know at
303-776-1072 x2.

More on the Colorado Wildfires

From: Beckett Stokes <BStokes@coloradodiocese.org

Date: Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 11:54 AM

Hello All -

I will include this in the Weekly Update today, but I know people are anxious to know what's happening with the fires around the state, so here is what we know so far.  We will, of course, continue to distribute updates as we get them (so, if your congregation is responding to those affected by the fires in some way, or if you have needs for help and support, please let me know).  I am also posting updates on our Facebook page.

With fires raging around the state, parishes in many communities are affected by and responding to the worst wildfires the state has seen in some time.

The Waldo Canyon fire in the Colorado Springs area exploded overnight and ran into neighborhoods on the northwest side of Colorado Springs. Authorities now estimate at least 100 homes have been lost.  With more than 32,000 people in the area evacuated, parishes in Colorado Springs have been working to pair parishioners who are evacuated with other parishioners who have room. The Rev. Sally Hubbell, an associate priest at St. Michael's, which was in the evacuation area, said, "I think half our parish is staying with the other half." Chapel of Our Saviour, also in Colorado Springs, is offering to help find homes for evacuees, as is St. Matthias in Monument. Grace & St. Stephen's is also working to pair those with rooms to spare with those who've had to leave their homes.

Chapel of Our Saviour has also been collecting supplies requested by local agencies offering support to evacuees and firefighters, including Care and Share and Westside Cares. They've also offered their parish hall to St. Michael's as they need it.

Cathedral Ridge, the diocesan conference and retreat center outside of Woodland Park, is not in an evacuation area at this time, but out of an abundance of caution, they have evacuated staff.

Episcopal Relief & Development has been in touch with the Office of the Bishop to see how they can help. The Office of the Bishop will take donations designated for fire relief and get them to either parishes in the area, Episcopal Relief & Development, or local agencies who are providing direct services to evacuees, firefighters and those who have lost property.

There are also evacuations in Boulder, thanks to the Flagstaff Fire, which remains relatively small at something over 200 acres, but given weather conditions, authorities are concerned it could grow. And, in the Fort Collins area, the High Park Fire has burned more than 87,000 acres and 257 homes.  Authorities there hope that favorable weather conditions in the area will allow evacuees to return to their neighborhoods within the next 48 hours.

There are also fires burning near Mancos and Pagosa Springs in southwestern Colorado. The Rev. Bob Seney, who serves the vicar at St. Paul's in Mancos, reports that conditions there are improving.  "A light rain last night helped and clouds are helping to keep lower temps this a.m., " he reports. "All of this is helping the fire fighters.  They are positive in their reports, but always with the warning that with a fire things can change quickly." The Rev. Doug Neel, rector at St. Patrick's in Pagosa, reports that ranches in that area have been evacuated due to the Little Sand Creek Fire, which is 30 percent contained at this point.

The Rev. Dean Smith, who serves as the vicar at Peace in Christ Episcopal / Lutheran ministry in Elizabeth, sent this Litany in Time of Wildfires from the Rocky Mountain Synod (ECLA):

Litany in Time of Wildfires

This litany may be used by those who are concerned by the destruction of wildfires.

Holy God, in the wake of fires that devour and consume,

Refresh us with the water of life.

In the barren places of ash and dust,

Restore us with the water of life.

When all we can see is devastation and despair,

Renew us with the water of life.

When those whose vocations are to protect the property of others are tired and weary,

Renew them with the water of life.

When the creatures of the forest are frightened, displaced, or injured,

Renew them with the water of life.

When the fires have ceased, the cycle of renewal begins, and the plants and animals return,

Renew them with the water of life.

In Christ, we are washed clean.

    We are refreshed.

In Christ, we drink from the wellspring of hope.

    We are restored.

In Christ, we dance in the fountain of life.

    We are renewed.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
