Leap Into Lent

A Special Thank You
Many thanks to the people that made Lent a meaningful time.  For the men who cooked pancakes at the Shrove Tuesday supper, Deacon Dana who led Morning Prayer and meditation every Wednesday, and those who attended the service and then got roped into folding the bulletins over coffee and laughter.  A special thank you to the facilitators for the program, Kate Eaton, D'Anne Rudden, Mike Pipis, the Rev. Jack Stapleton, and Father Max, and to all who brought delicious soups and breads to share - and of course to those who attended.

Lenten Morning Prayer

Lenten Morning Prayer continues the first Wednesday of April (April 4th) at 9:00 A.M.. You are invited to observe a Holy Lent by attending Morning Prayer in the Chapel.  Those who wish to may stay for coffee/ tea and fellowship afterwards. Some participants have suggested continuing morning prayer even after Lent is past.  What do you think? If you would like to continue having morning prayer on a weekday,
please speak with Deacon Dana Solomon.

Pre-Show Class with Suzanne Frazier
Introduction to Exploring Your Spiritual Journey
Through Contemplative Art
.
If you have always wanted to explore your spiritual journey in a non-verbal way from the center of your heart, this is the workshop for you! Art is the perfect metaphor for the contemplative experience. As you begin to draw with the oil pastels, you will quickly discover you can trust your inner intuitive process to create a drawing you had no idea you could complete when you began.

Suzanne has taught Spiritual Journey Art Retreats at the Abby at Walberga, the Highlands Presbyterian Retreat Center in Allenspark, and Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. We are fortunate to have her offering a class at St. Stephen's.  Wednesday, April 18, 10 AM to 3 PM. $75 includes a lovely lunch and all materials.

Call or email Gretchen Heuring to sign up.

     Easter
Crawling Among The Tombs

In 1999 I spent a month at St. George's College in West Jerusalem. I awoke several mornings and headed to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for prayer. This fourth century church contains the spot where Jesus was crucified and buried. The actual tomb of Jesus is surrounded by a small building called the Edicule, which has two small chambers inside. As one enters the first chamber one sees a carved stone shaped much like our baptismal font in the center of a room that holds four or five people at best. It's known as the Chapel of the Archangel and the "Holy Rock".  It's the place where the "angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door" (Matthew 28:2) as well as the place where the angel spoke about Jesus' resurrection to the women who came to the tomb. A very small door leads to the actual tomb of Jesus which requires you to literally get on your knees and crawl into the tomb. It's a very humbling experience to crawl through that opening.  From the moment I crawled through that entrance it became a symbol for me.  It's a reminder of the place of God in my life and a metaphor for the condition of my heart when dealing with the things of God and the lives of others.  When we see others from a place of humility, on our knees, it helps us to understand them from God's perspective, as children of God.  As John Watson once said, "be kind; everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle".
The joy of Easter and the gift of the resurrection
should propel us to be better people full of
joy and compassion for the world.

Healing Our Grief Service

Our choirmaster,
Brenda diZerega, suggested we gather to share our thoughts and feelings regarding the losses we have experienced lately.

We would like to invite you to a conversation with one another and experts in this area on Wednesday, April 11th, beginning at 6:30 pm. We will close our time together with an informal Eucharist and prayer service.

Hope you will put this on your calendar and join us.

Fr. Max+

Youth Sunday During the months that have five Sundays, we have a special service called "Youth Sunday."  At the 10:00am service, young parishioners help serve by chalicing, reading, and ushering, as well as providing some of the special music.

We will have our next Youth Sunday on April 29th at the second service, and we would love to have you come support our youth as they serve in our congregation.

Come for a special children's liturgy, and come dressed up as your favorite Dr. Seuss character in honor of his birthday last month.

Graduating?

Although there is still snow in the mountains, graduation is just around the corner.  If you or someone in your family will be graduating from high school or college this spring, please let the office know (303-776-1072),
so we can honor our graduates properly.

The stained glass windows from our original Church have been framed and  hung in our current Church, in the front hallway and along the courtyard.  Don't they look spendid?  Many thanks to Lynne Lemmer
and her crew.

If you wish to contribute to the cost of framing and hanging, make out your check out to

        WeedCleanup
Spring has sprung...

...and so have the weeds!  For those wonderful people who adopted an area of the church yard to care for last year, we sincerely hope that you will continue to take care of that same plot this year.  You gave a wonderful gift to the church, and the yard looked so much better as a result of your loving ministrations!  St. Stephen's parishioners thank you, the neighbors thank you, the community thanks you, and I thank you!

Also, a big thank you to Eric Schaetzel for removing a badly damaged tree, and for some much needed tree pruning.

If any of you need additional help, or need to find someone else to take over your plot, please ask around, then let me know.  I urge you to keep up this satisfying ministry that makes our church look loved,
respected, and well supported.

  Funeral Flowers

Thank You

My family and I would like to thank all of you for your support during Sheila's hospitalization and death. Your visits to her, your offers of help, your cards, your words, and, most of all, your prayers, were a comfort to her and to us. Thank you to all who participated in her service. The liturgy and the music were beautiful, just the way she wanted it. Thank you to St. Cecilia's Guild for the lovely reception following the service. When Sheila and I arrived here two years ago we were immediately welcomed by you.  I feel so blessed to be

a part of the saints of Christ here at St. Stephen's.

Sincerely, Chuck Cooprider

Announcement

It's with sadness that I inform you of the resignation of our Deacon, Jan Dewlen. Jan has been a member of St. Stephen's for more than thirty years and a Deacon here for thirteen.  Among other duties, Jan has been in charge of pastoral care and outreach during most of her ordained ministry.  She has affected many lives at St. Stephen's and will be greatly missed.  Her husband, Jerry, has also contributed to the life and ministry at St. Stephen's in several areas especially as our newsletter editor for twenty eight years.  Please join me in wishing them the best for the future and may they be blessed as they seek God's will.  I have copied Jan's letter to Bishop O'Neill and me for your information.

Faithfully,

Fr. Max+

The Right Reverend Robert O'Neill

cc:  The Reverend Max Bailey, Rector

Dear Bishop O'Neill,

I am writing to inform you of my resignation as deacon from St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Longmont.  I took a necessary leave of absence from February 19 to the present.  During that time I have spent much time in prayer and discernment and have been in a crucible of transformation and uprooting.  When praying with my Spiritual Director, I had a vision of God and me standing by a door of which God ever so gently closed.  God took my hand and we walked away.  After 31 years in my home church, God is calling me onward and I must leave home.  I do not know to where or to what, but in my past God has been so very faithful to lead me to the next opportunity to serve. I must let go now and take time to refresh spiritually and emotionally, and listen for God's still small voice.

In my thirteen years as an ordained deacon, Max Bailey has been a great mentor and colleague and I will ever be appreciative for the time I have served with him.  I discussed my resignation with him this day.

Faithfully,

The Reverend Jan Dewlen, Deacon
