 | | Maltby & Shire |
The dynamic duo of MALTBY & SHIRE has collected just about every accolade the entertainment industry has to offer, including Emmys, Tonys, Oscars and more. And both have called CT home. Both were born to musical fathers: Irving Daniel Shire was a Buffalo society band leader and piano teacher while Richard Maltby, Sr was a well-known orchestra leader. The boys started working together as students at Yale where they wrote two musicals, Cyrano and Grand Tour, which were produced by the Yale Dramatic Association. Their first Off-Bway show, The Sap of Life, was produced in 1961 at One Sheridan Square Theater in Greenwich Village. Their first Broadway credit was in 1968, when their song "The Girl of the Minute" was used in New Faces of 1968. In 1977 the Manhattan Theater Club produced Starting Here, Starting Now, a review of their earlier songs, written for other works. Their collaboration continued with Baby (1983), Big (1996). and Take Flight, which had its world premiere in July 2007 in London.
Beyond their collaboration, RICHARD MALTBY, JR. has conceived and directed the only two musical revues ever to win the Tony Award for Best Musical: Ain't Misbehavin' and Fosse. He was director/co-lyricist for the American version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance starring Bernadette Peters and was co-lyricist for Miss Saigon, winning an Evening Standard Award and a Tony nomination for Best Score. Maltby also conceived and directed Ring Of Fire, The Johnny Cash Musical, co-wrote the book & lyrics for The Pirate Queen (2007) and was most recently represented on Broadway as the director of the new, original musical The Story of My Life which received a 2009 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Production of a Musical. In his spare time, he write cryptic crossword puzzles!
Once Barbra Streisand's Musical Director, DAVID SHIRE began scoring for television in the 1960s and made the leap to scoring feature films in the early 1970s. He was married to actress Talia Shire for whose brother Francis Ford Coppola he scored The Conversation, perhaps his best known score, in 1974. Additional screen credits include Two People, All the Presdident's Men, The Hindenburg, Farewell My Lovely, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, 2010, Return to Oz, Shirt Circuit, Max Dugan Returns and Zodiac. He composed original music for Saturday Night Fever for which he received two Grammy nominations, and won the Academy Award for Best Song for his and Norman Gimble's theme song for Norma Rae, "It Goes Like it Goes". He was also nominated the same year in the same category for "The Promise (I'll Never Say Goodbye)" from the motion picture The Promise with lyrics by Marilyn & Alan Bergman. In 1980 his song With You I'm Born Again, recorded by Billy Preston and Syreeta, was a top five international hit and stayed on the pop charts for 26 weeks. Shire's hundreds of scores for television include Sarah, Plain and Tall, Raid on Entebbe, The Kennedys of Massachussetts, Serving in Silence, Rear Window, The Women of Brewster Place and The Heidi Chronicles and have earned five Emmy nominations. He also composed themes for the television series Alice and McCloud. He is currently married to actress Didi Conn.

From the desk of the Artistic Director
Greetings!
Summertime, and the livin' is anything but easy... That's why we've chosen a delightful, yet thoughtful production for our summer fare. I've wanted to do "Starting Here, Staring Now" since I saw it on West 46th Street in 1977. I hope you'll join us for an evening of refreshment, both of the soul and the palate. Our liquor permit is active and we're preparing some tempting treats.
SEE YOU AT THE THEATRE!
