Richard Dresser

Richard Dresser is a popular American playwright whose work has been widely performed in theatres across the US and in Europe. In addition to his plays, he wrote the book for the Broadway musical Good Vibrations and the musical Johnny Baseball. Dresser has also served as a writer and producer for multiple television series, most notably The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd.

Born in 1951 and raised in Massachusetts, Dresser worked at several New England factory jobs including one position where he manufactured thighs for G.I. Joe action figures. As a Grad student at University of North Carolina, Dresser took an elective course in dramatic writing that led to the abandonment of his planned career in radio. He credits his early career experiences in factories and the corporate world with inspiring his workplace comedies The Downside and Below the Belt set in a pharmaceutical company and a manufacturing plant, respectively.

Since his early career, Dresser has been extremely prolific, with 14 full-length plays by 2009 and six one-acts that have all been produced. He is a favorite at such prestigious events as the Humana Festival in Louisville, Kentucky, the Contemporary American Theatre Festival in West VA, and at the Laguna Playhouse and Old Globe in California. He scored a double whammy in 1987 with premieres of Better Days in Philadelphia and The Downside at New Haven's Long Wharf Theatre. His recently published trilogy of plays about happiness in America includes Augusta (working class), The Pursuit of Happiness (middle class), and A View of the Harbor (upper class). Other plays are Rounding Third, Gun-Shy, Something In the Air, Alone at the Beach, and Below the Belt, named by the Wall Street Journal as the Best new American play of the 1996 season, His recent projects include the book for a musical, Johnny Baseball, which was recently nominated for seven awards from the Independent Reviewers of New England. His play The Last Days of Mickey & Jean, about a notorious Boston gangster in early retirement, premiered last spring at Merrimack Repertory Theater in Lowell, Massachusetts and is scheduled for three regional productions in the summer/fall. His latest play is The Hand of God about reality television. He also created and writes the TV/web series Life Coach starring Cheri Oteri for AMC.

Dresser now lives upstate New York with his wife and son.

Greetings!
I love this time of year: the extra daylight, the warmer temps, the flowers that bloom in the spring, tra la... I am always energized in spring. And we're busy making plans. This summer, SKTC will present it's first professional concert musical: the delightful "Starting Here, Starting Now", featuring the fabulous music of Richard Maltby and David Shire. I've coveted this piece since I first saw it in 1977 (although I was just a baby then :). Watch for details and plan to spend a Friday or Saturday evening with us in mid-July! We're working on getting our liquor permit to begin serving wine at our shows.

We're also getting our educational ducks in a row once more. Our adult acting classes started on March 20th and the Stray Kittens program is set for 10-14 year olds from July 2-July 27. See below for more details. You can enroll for either by contacting me at info@straykatstheatrecompany.org.

And of course we have our regular course of terrific events lined up for late April and May at Edmond Town Hall and Stone River Grille.

SEE YOU AT THE THEATRE!

Coming up: Barbara Rhoades is back in Wonderful World  by Richard Dresser

A hilarious look at modern relationships and the mess we make of them, "Wonderful World" premiered at the 2001 Humana Festival, one of the most prestigious playwriting festivals in the country.

"Dresser sets up an ascending sequence of increasingly bizarre and wildly hilarious scenes in which his characters try by hook or by crook to convince the others to see things their way... It's bright and brittle, oh so nasty ..."  according to the Sacramento News and Review.  Curtain Up called it "a witty, wise and smartly crafted serious comedy about escalating family misunderstandings that involve two brothers and three women in their lives..."

"I first came across the play when I was waiting to audition for something else," says Kate Katcher who will direct. "I'd gotten there early and it was on the shelf next to where I was sitting. I started reading and hated to stop. I ended up having to buy the play before I left New York that day. I had to know what happened to these people!"

The cast includes (from Left to right) Barbara Rhoades,  Barbara Ellen Stuart, Damian Long, Joanna Keylock and Sean Hannon.

Stray Kats sires Stray Kittens this July
SKTC will offer a very special summer program for kids ages 10-14, Stray Kittens. And you don't have to audition!

"Stray Kittens is for those kids who don't necessarily want to be in the 'big musical', or those who didn't make it into that production, or simply couldn't afford the costs of paying to play in a production with a huge price tag, or for those who simply want to learn more about acting. The idea of children auditioning for a local show and risking rejection is just wrong to me", said Kate Katcher, Artistic Director. "It's hard enough to audition on the professional level, but at least there you're not being asked to pay for the privilege. When you pay to be included in a program, you should be participating at all times and on every level."

Through theater games, vocal and physical warm-ups, participants will apply new-found skills to rehearsals for non-musical properties. Under consideration are Neil Simon's "Fools" and James Thurber's "A Thurber Carnival". "Both are hilarious plays with lots of opportunities for kids to shine," Katcher continues. "We don't believe in stars; we believe in inclusion. Kids are inherently talented. They just need a chance to express themselves."

The Stray Kittens program will run from July 2nd through July 27th, Monday -Friday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Edmond Town Hall with a performance on the evening of July 26th.

Tuition is $600 when paid by April 30th. ($625 if paid on line by credit card). After April 30th, tuition is $700 ($725 if paid on line by credit card).
