Another record set

Dear Friend,

We're contacting you today with news about Pittsburgh's economy and with the latest installment in our journalistic series on Pittsburgh's entrepreneurial progress. (If you would no longer like to receive emails from PittsburghTODAY, please use safe-unsubscribe below).

In July, the Pittsburgh region set an all-time record high for its labor force participation. A growing labor force is a bullish sign for a regional economy, as growing numbers of people are working and seeking work. And at 1,254,110, Pittsburgh's labor force has never been as high.

Percent Change in Labor Force, July 2011 - July 2012

Both components of the labor force, the number of employed and the number of unemployed, have increased in each of the past three months.  The unemployment rate has been increasing -- from 6.7 percent in May to 7.1 percent in July, as our labor force has grown -- perhaps because net migration to the region is growing and more people are re-entering the workforce.

Finally, please look for Part V of PittsburghTODAY's Venture City series, "A Culture of Risk," --you can read it by clicking here. The first four parts of the series are also available on PittsburghTODAY.org, as well as updated data on venture capital investment for the second quarter of 2012.
