Unemployment drops, jobs rise

The April 2011 employment numbers show Greater Pittsburgh continuing its comparatively strong, post-recession job growth performance. Pittsburgh was second among the 15 benchmark regions in year-over-year job growth with a 1.35 percent increase. Only Milwaukee, with 2.92 percent job growth was higher during the same time period. The benchmark average was .51 percent.
 | Between April 2010 and April 2011, Pittsburgh's nonfarm job numbers increased by 1.35 percent. | In April, unemployment in metropolitan Pittsburgh dropped to 6.5 percent according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Only Minneapolis had a lower unemployment rate at 6.3 percent. The average unemployment rate among the benchmark regions was 7.9 percent, with Detroit continuing to have the highest unemployment rate at 11.1 percent. For more information, please click this link.
While Pittsburgh showed strong job numbers in April, barge traffic declined. In comparison with April 2010 numbers, barge traffic numbers this April show that coal traffic decreased by 28 percent and non coal traffic decreased by 35 percent.
