"What information do thieves get by scanning the RFID chip in my credit card?
Dear Bob: That is a very good question. It does vary slightly bank by bank but there are some common threads.
In all the tests we have done we are able to scan:
· a credit card number
· expiration date
· dynamic CVV code (changes with each scan)
· card holder name (occasionally)
· bank name (occasionally)
· type of card such as "gold" or "platinum" (occasionally)
On some occasions the credit card number is different than the account number printed on the front of the card. We did tests using that different number and were able to successfully make a purchase as well.
In many cases thieves can make purchases with just a credit card number and expiration date. There are major phone order companies that do not ask for the 3 digit code or validate the shipping address. To see this demonstration, click here and watch the Inside Edition news piece.
Also we have taken the information scanned and copied it onto the magnetic stripe of a hotel room key and used that room key to make a purchase at a retail location. To see this demonstration, click here and watch the WTHR Indianapolis news piece.
