McLarty Associates (previously known as McLarty International, LLC) is an international strategic advisory firm which is based in Washington, D.C. Today, the company represents Fortune 200 companies with substantial global footprints. The company also advises emerging companies venturing abroad for the first time. Most of McLarty Associates' staff is based in Washington, DC and New York, with overseas associates located in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, Philippines, Egypt, China, Hong Kong, and India. The company's approach is to work closely with clients to analyze the international opportunity or problem, assess the tools available to the client, develop the strategy, and execute it. McLarty Associates does not represent foreign countries, nor act as registered lobbyists in the United States. McLarty Associates has a strategic partnership with Covington & Burling to provide their clients with lobbying and advocacy practices. The company's financial markets practice is based in New York and is responsible for advising financial institutions on politico-economic risk issues that affect their investment and risk management strategies. The company's film and entertainment practice advises major Hollywood studios and filmmakers on internationally-themed media projects, from story generation through scriptwriting to physical production challenges overseas. While the company has no ongoing projects in Uzbekistan, it represents companies in the food and agriculture industry - the very two industries that Uzbekistan is keen to develop further. McLarty Associates is led by Thomas F. "Mack" McLarty, III who is president of McLarty Associates. Mr. McLarty co-founded the company in 1998 following a distinguished record of business leadership and public service, including various roles advising three U.S. Presidents: Bill Clinton, George H. W. Bush, and Jimmy Carter. Mr. McLarty is also chairman of the McLarty Companies, a fourth-generation family transportation business. Additionally, he serves as senior adviser to the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, and as senior adviser to the law firm Covington & Burling. Eric Trachtenberg, Director of Agriculture and Food Sector, will represent McLarty Associates at the AUCC level. Trachtenberg has more than 20 years' experience working in and around Eurasia and East Asia. Before joining McLarty in January 2012, he served as Vice President, International Trade Policy, for the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council (USAPEEC). During his time at USAPEEC, he worked on market access issues worldwide, including in the former Soviet Union. Most recently, he met with the Kyrgyz government to examine the effects of the Russian-led Customs Union on Bishkek's WTO commitments. Before moving to USAPEEC in 2010, Trachtenberg worked for USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) both in Washington and overseas. During his 15-year government career, he served as a Foreign Service Officer in key U.S. export markets, including China, Taiwan and Russia and covered USDA development programs in Mongolia. From 2007 to 2010, Trachtenberg was posted in Beijing with FAS at the U.S. Embassy. While in China, he served for two years as director of the Agricultural Trade Office in Beijing and for a year as Senior Agricultural Attaché in the Office of Agricultural Affairs. He covered Mongolia for the entire three years in Beijing. From 2001 to 2005, Trachtenberg was Deputy Chief of the Agricultural Affairs Section at the American Institute in Taiwan, and from 1998-2001 he was assigned to the Office of Agricultural Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. During this time, he traveled to more than 30 Russian regions and reported on developments in Russian agriculture. While at FAS in Washington, he worked on agricultural trade policy issues, international development, management of overseas posts and Foreign Service personnel, forest products and participated in the World Trade Organization accession negotiations for Russia, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Prior to his career at FAS, Trachtenberg worked in the U.S. House of Representatives, the Environmental Protection Agency, and on the Taiwan stock market. Trachtenberg received an M.P.A. in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and an M.S. in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University where he concentrated in public policy and international economic development. He also completed a B.A. from Cornell University with a double major in Government and Economics. He also studied Russian at Cornell University and Mandarin Chinese at the Taipei Language Institute in Beijing. |
