International Trade - The Future for Small Businesses
In this global economy, because of the availability of online interaction in real time with potential and existing clients, business to consumer and business to business sales and purchases no longer need to take place within the confines of brick and mortar edifices. If you are in the product business, because of low cost and overnight delivery companies like FedEx, it has long been entirely possible for you to do business without your clients ever physically visiting your warehouse. Now, because of technology, just-in-time manufacturing, economies of scale and logistical improvements, not only is your marketplace interstate - it is also international. If your business is not involved in any type of international transactions, you may be missing out on some major opportunities. At the leading edge of policy and programs being developed and implemented to assist and support American businesses is the office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), a cabinet-level department of the U.S. government. The USTR is led by The Honorable Ron Kirk, who will be one of this week's guests on Biz Talk With Josh Smith. Ambassador Kirk served two terms as Mayor of Dallas, TX as well as Secretary of State under Governor Ann Richards.
Mr. William C. Lane is a leading business advocate for free trade and global engagement in Washington D.C. who has been with Caterpillar since 1975 and held numerous leadership positions in Washington.
