Washington, D.C. Chamber of Commerce President Barbara Lang Discusses Organization's Support of Small and Large Businesses Originally known as the Washington Chamber of Commerce when it formed in 1938, the organization was established to provide services for African-American businesses in the city. In 1946, the name of the organization was changed to the Negro Chamber of Commerce to reflect the unique needs of black businesses at that time. In 1956, the Chamber re-evaluated the needs of businesses in the city and changed its name to the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce. With the new name came a new direction as the Chamber expanded its operations to address the needs of all firms in the District - minority, and non-minority, small and large.
Ms. Barbara Lang has been president and chief executive officer of the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce since March 2002. She has complete responsibility for the operations and the strategic direction of the organization. Prior to joining the Chamber, Ms. Lang was the vice president of corporate services and chief procurement officer for Fannie Mae.
Mr. Antwayne Ford is the 2012 chairman elect of the Chamber, and will take over as chair in 2013. His entrepreneurial efforts include founding and serving as president of Enlightened Inc. Prior to starting Enlightened, Mr. Ford worked in information systems for over 20 years, including technical roles at MCI and INTELSAT.
Among the many areas to be discussed by Joshua Smith on this Thursday's show will be the impact of the NBA lockout on local small businesses, as well as the current vision, future efforts and programs of the D.C. Chamber. Please tune in!
