According to the most recent research on women business owners, 10.1 million firms are owned by women, employing more than 13 million people and generating $1.9 trillion in sales as of 2008; 1.9 million firms are owned by women of color and those firms employ 1.2 million people and generate revenue of $165 billion annually (Key Facts about Women Owned Businesses, 2008-2009 Update, Center for Women's Business Research.) Women are starting businesses faster than any other segment of the global population, and there must be good reasons why they feel that conditions are ripe - and right - for them to take the entrepreneurial plunge.
To hear some of these reasons, and to explore national and international programs both corporate and government designed to support and assist women in business, tune in to Biz Talk With Josh this Thursday when Joshua Smith will be joined by Ms. Sheila Brooks, founder, president and CEO, SRB Communications, LLC.
Mr. Brooks is an Emmy-award winning journalist, entrepreneur, and advocate for minority and women's issues and small business. She has been in the television and communications industry for 33 years, and is the Entrepreneur in Residence in the School of Communications at Howard University. Ms. Brooks also serves on the board of directors of the Center for Women's Business Research.
