Sweet Taste of Success - Georgetown Cupcake

One of the most interesting food phenomena of the early 21st century in the United States is a resurgence of interest in cupcakes.  According to a prediction from Mintel, a Chicago-based market research firm, cupcakes will be the fastest-growing baked-goods industry between 2008 and 2013. We see cupcakes as the new confection of choice of individuals seeking a baked sweet treat for a little bit of cash, and because buying a cupcake won't break your wallet, is less expensive than buying a whole cake, and they come in such a wide variety of flavors and designs, people are literally eating them up -- and some smart entrepreneurs are turning their love of baking into fast-growing enterprises to satisfy the demand.

One such enterprise is Georgetown Cupcake. On Thursday, January 27, 2011, Josh Smith will be joined by
Georgetown Cupcake founders -- sisters Katherine Kallinis and Sophie LaMontagne. Katherine and Sophie traded careers in fashion and private equity to pursue something a little sweeter - their passion for artful cupcakes. Both lifelong bakers, Katherine and Sophie opened Georgetown Cupcake in February 2008 as Washington, DC's first and only cupcakery. In addition to their bakery business, Katherine and Sophie also star in DC CUPCAKES, their new TV series on The Learning Channel.

The sisters started baking along side their grandmother when Katherine was three and Sophie was four. The very first cake they baked was for their grandfather's birthday -- a vanilla cake with a milk chocolate frosting.  Having no formal culinary school training, and only armed with their grandmother's recipes, Katherine and Sophie quit their corporate jobs to follow their dream of opening a bakery together. Katherine and Sophie and their staff now bake over 5,000 cupcakes each day and ship their cupcakes all over the country. Their cupcakes have won numerous awards and contests and were voted "Best Bakery" in Washington, D.C.
