Created by Congress in 1976, the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is an independent voice for small business within the federal government. Appointed by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, the Chief Counsel for Advocacy directs the office. The Chief Counsel advances the views, concerns, and interests of small business before Congress, the White House, federal agencies, federal courts, and state policy makers. Tune in Thursday, January 13th when Joshua Smith will host a show on small businesses and the SBA's Office of Advocacy, featuring the new Chief Counsel for Advocacy at the SBA, Dr. Winslow Sargeant.
Dr. Sargeant has built a career that blends entrepreneurship, innovation and venture capitalism with a commitment to engineering education and academia. Shortly after he received his PhD in 1995, Sargeant and nine colleagues formed AANetcom, a semiconductor integrated circuit design company, with $1.2 million in seed money from Cisco Systems Inc. Two and a half year's later, Sargeant and his co-owners sold it for $900 million to British Columbia-based PMC-Sierra. From 2001-2005, Sargeant served as the program manager for the Small Business Innovations Research Program in the National Science Foundation's Engineering Directorate. In 2006, he joined Venture Investors as a managing director. He serves as a director of the University of Wisconsin Foundation, vice chairman of the UW-Madison Astronomy Board of Visitors and a trustee for the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, in addition to various roles on boards at other universities.
