Information Security: Not Just for the "Big Boys"
Large firms and organizations have scores of administrators, analysts, and programmers all focused towards one objective: Security. Though most hackers, viruses, and thieves target large companies, small businesses and entrepreneurs are not safe from the fray. This threat grows larger by the day. What can a small business do to curtail these threats? There are a number of cost effective options that can improve the security of small firms.
-Maintain up-to-date/ effective antivirus software: Norton, Trend, Microsoft Security Essentials will serve as your frontline defense. If you keep them updated, they will keep hackers and maleware from getting into a machine in the first place. This is a much easier solution than attempting to remove viruses after they have already invaded.
-Utilize secure mailing procedures: Whether you are using an onsite server or you employ online email services, maintain a strong spam blocker, and educate your employees not to open unknown attachments.
-Encrypt/ passwords protect key data: This goes largely unnoticed by many small businesses. It should be critical that all data, customer or employee, be secure. Most small firms use Microsoft Access to store customer and employee data. Access has built- in security that allows you to password protect and encrypt data. Stolen data can result in damage to business infrastructure, lost customers, or even lawsuits. I do not recommend keeping sensitive data in an Excel spreadsheet.
Taking these steps will go a long way to ensuring your business is secure, efficient, and productive. All of these solutions are low cost, and in the long run, will save dollars and headaches. For more info on Security, you can review "Small Business Information Security: The Fundamentals" written by the U.S. Department of Commerce (nist.gov).
