Thank You, Amazing CDC Volunteers!

Southern Management
Click the photo above for more photos of these hardworking volunteers.

Volunteers from the Parliaments Apartments (Southern Management Corporation) made a number of improvements to the Child Development Center (CDC), including steps in the back of the parking lot, handicapped signs and pavement markings. The work was completed in time for the CDC's 2012 Open House on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 2 - 5 p.m.

Visitors can meet the teachers, tour the facilities, and enroll their children. Download an open house flyer in English or Spanish

Holy Spirit Catholic Parish Joins ACCA
Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, located on Woodland Way off of Braddock Road, became an official ACCA member at the September ACCA board meeting. Chuck Woods will serve as the official representative to ACCA, assisted by Ana Lisa Pinon. Although the church is located outside the ACCA boundaries, many Holy Spirit parishioners live within the area served by ACCA and have long participated in ACCA ministries and the CDC Board. Reverend John O'Donohue is pastor of Holy Spirit, which is also a member of Fairfax FISH, an ecumenical outreach program similar to ACCA.

ACCA is joining with members of other service organizations in the Annandale-Fairfax area in a coordinated effort to respond to Virginia Governor McDonnell's call to designate Sept. 29 as a statewide
Day to Serve. The emphasis will be on fighting hunger in Virginia. Volunteers will be stationed outside Giant supermarkets in Annandale, Loehhmann's Plaza and Bradlick Shopping Centers to collect items for the ACCA Food Pantry.

Volunteers are needed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Bradlick Giant. If you can help, please call or email
Richard Magleby 703-354-8123 or 703-622-5633. This would be a great activity for teens needing service hours. A poster and flyers listing the needed items will be provided.

There will also be a 3K Walk beginning and ending at the main parking lot at Robinson Secondary School, 5035 Sideburn Road, Fairfax, VA. The event is free, but walkers are asked to bring and donate some non-perishable food items, which will go to local food pantries. Onsite registration begins at 8 a.m.; the walk starts at 8:30 a.m. Walkers can also
register online.

2012 CROP Hunger Walk

Fresh air, fall colors, and a "walk in the park" await volunteers who participate in the Annandale CROP Hunger Walk, October 13, at Lake Accotink Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and walkers hit the trail at 8:30 a.m. after a brief opening ceremony. The CROP Hunger Walk benefits Church World Service efforts to fight hunger and poverty around the world, and part of the money raised is returned to ACCA.

Posters created by young artists on the theme of fighting hunger and poverty will be on display. All participants receive certificates, and winners are announced at the CROP Walk. Youth are invited to submit posters to the ACCA CDC by October 5. For walk or poster information, call or email Camille Mittelholtz, 703-573-0074.

Annual Pastors and Partners Luncheon

Invitations will soon be in the mail for the the annual Pastors and Partners Luncheon, a once-a-year gathering of ACCA-affiliated church pastors, official representatives and committee chairs. This year's event will be on Thursday, October 18, 11:30 a.m., at the Annandale United Methodist Church/Wright Hall.

The program will highlight ACCA ministries and the individuals they benefit. Giant Food will again provide food for the event. Volunteers are needed to help with set up, registration, and clean up, as well as to serve as greeters. If you would like to help, please call or email
 Mary Lee Di Spirito, 703-256-9513.

Employment Services

In this tough economy, landing a new job can be difficult. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) maintains an employment center at 3900 Howard St., Annandale, which is open to all comers. Visitors can learn about resume writing, networking, and effective job search techniques, or attend workshops. There is no cost for these services. Hours of operation are Tues, 5-9 p.m.; Wed., 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Fri., 1 - 5 p.m.; and Sat. 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. For more information/appointments, call 703-639-0810 or email wel-ec-virginianorth@ldschurch.org

Time to Re-Link Your VIC Card

Emergency Financial Assistance

emergency

In August, 52 households were served, and more than $23,000 was paid on their behalf for rental assistance, utilities, medical bills and other assistance. Examples of Christ-like charity included paying a portion of a senior's dental bill for tooth extractions, a partial plate and several fillings. In another example, a single mother lost her job; she found employment, but the loss of income for three weeks left her unable to pay her rent; ACCA paid a portion of her August rent.

Food Pantry

food pantry The pantry made 63 deliveries in August assisting 206 individuals. 19 families at Shelter House received gift certificates. The food pantry is low on many items, including: canned tuna, meat, chicken, vegetables, fruit and juice; cooking oil; pasta, dry beans, and lentils; four, sugar and rice; cereal, crackers, pancake mix; diapers of any size. Please bring your donations to any ACCA participating church or to the Child Development Center during normal business hours.

Furniture Ministry

furniture You call this a vacation? There were no furniture pickups or deliveries during August. Instead, volunteers cleaned the warehouse and storage bins; had all three trucks in for maintenance, repairs, and state inspections; and held the annual Furniture Review and Planning meeting. In 2012 alone, the furniture ministry has made 642 pickups and deliveries, served 320 needy households including 1,261 individuals, and handled a total of 1,563 furniture items. Hats off to these hard workers. Pickups and deliveries resumed in September.

If you have gently used items, including mattresses and box springs (single, double or queen size) chests of drawers and dressers, kitchen and dining room tables and chairs, please call 703-256-9513 or email Don Di Spirito.

Transportation and Meals on Wheels

transportationACCA volunteers made 455 deliveries in August. Each delivery includes a hot meal and a cold lunch meal. Transportation volunteers provided 27 rides to clients for medical or other appointments.

Mary Anne Lecos, representing ACCA (on left), chaired a panel discussion at Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads on how local charities put our donations to good use. Also in the photo, Thomas Nichols, Director, Baileys Crossroads Community Shelter; Laura Martin, Director, Patrick Henry Shelter; and Sandra Chisholm, Community Liaison to Fairfax County's Faith-Based Community.
