Many medical conditions require more than just medications from a general doctor. Did you know that many have both dental and nutritional complications as well?  We have compiled a list of 35 common problems people experience that have both nutrition and dental components.  If you suffer from any listed, you may benefit from the expertise of both a dentist and a dietitian to avoid complications.  Luckily for you, DiBona Dental Group has both to ensure you remain in optimal health!

Worst Foods For Your Dental Health & Why

Candy & Gum (sugar gum):

provide sugar which feed the bacteria responsible for cavities. Sugar-Free gum with xylitol can actually be good for cavity prevention because it stimulates saliva flow and removes food particles from teeth.

Sticky &/or Chewy Foods:

have the ability to get lost in the interproximal spaces (between the teeth), trapping cavity forming bacteria

Carbonated Soft Drinks (regular OR diet):

contain phosphorous and carbonation which erode the enamel of teeth and make them more prone to cavities (along with stains and discoloration).

Fruit or Vegetable Juices:

can contain as much sugar as regular soda (sometimes more!); sugar acts as fuel for cavity forming bacteria.

Fermentable Carbohydrates (4 types listed below):

can drop salivary pH to an environment optimal for decay: <5.5 pH

1.  grains/starches (crackers, chips, bread)

2.  fruits (specifically dried & canned)

3.  added sugar (molasses, corn syrup, honey)

4. sweetened dairy products (ice cream, chocolate milk)

Best Food For Your Dental Health and Why

Xtlitol/Sorbitol:
may inhibit growth of Streptococcus mutans (the main bacteria responsible for forming cavities)
Sugar Free Gum:
helps stimulate saliva flow which increases pH above 5.5 which is a non-cavity promoting environment
Fish, Meats, Eggs, Poultry, Nuts, Seeds & Oil:
are cariostatic (meaning they do not fuel cavitity forming bacteria & do not drop pH of saliva <5.5)
Cheese & Milk:
help increase pH  above 5.5 which is a non-cavity promoting environment
Raw foods:
encourages chewing (which can help remove excess food debris) & increases saliva production (which helps increase pH above 5.5)

Let them eat
 CHOCOLATE!

Do you LOVE chocolateNow you can satisfy your chocolate cravings without compromising your nutrition or dental health. How?

Unsweetened cocoa powder provides the same intense chocolate flavor without the excessive fat or sugar an average chocolate bar contains---meaning lower risk for cavities and weight gain

Additionally, unsweetened cocoa powder is chock full of cancer fighting and heart healthy antioxidants such as epicatechin, catechin and proanthocyanidin.  So go ahead, indulge! Your dietitian and dentist gave you permission!

Some ideas for using unsweetened cocoa powder:
  • stir into yogurt
  • toss into a smoothie
  • mix into oatmeal
  • substitute for chocolate in baking
  • dust on top of frozen yogurt

THE DIETITIAN

Question from a patient:
'I like to eat beans but don't have time to cook dry beans. I don't want to eat all the salt that canned beans have.  How can I still have quick, great tasting beans without sacrificing nutrition?'

Answer:
Beans are an amazingly nutritious (and delicious) food!  Packed with both protein and fiber they are a great way to add a nutritional boost to many dishes.

Like you, I do not have the time to make beans from scratch, so I also go the canned route.

While convenient, canned beans do come with the caveat of being soaked in a sodium rich fluid.

Given the average American gets much more sodium than they need (upwards of 3,400mg/day), it is best to find a way to remove the beans from their salt bath.

Pouring beans into a colander and rinsing under cold water is the fastest way to remove the excess salt.

To add back some flavor try some these salt-free ingredients (in any combination):

-olive oil
-black pepper
-lime juice
-cumin
-garlic powder
-cilantro
-crushed red pepper
-red wine vinegar vinegar

Some of my favorite ways I enjoy beans are:

-tossed into a salad
-combined into a mango salsa
-pureed into a dip for veggies
-mixed into a hearty soup
