Striker Systems News & Events

Welcome to the December edition of Striker Systems News & Events.  As we come to the close of 2010 (our twenty-fifth anniversary), we would like to express our sincere appreciation for your patronage throughout this year.  It is you, our customer, that makes Striker Systems possible.  We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year.

Reduce Your 2010 Taxes with STRIKER Software!

Did you know that you may be able to expense 100% of your software purchases this year rather than applying a standard depreciation?  That's right, under IRC Section 179 qualifying taxpayers can choose to treat the cost of certain property as an expense and deduct it in the year the property is placed in service instead of depreciating it over several years.  This could potentially save you thousands in taxes!

For additional information we invite you to visit the following web link and recommend that you speak to your tax professional.

Are You Using AutoCAD or Inventor 2007 or Earlier?

If so, you'll want to be aware of Autodesk's current It's Time promotion. For eligible products that are version R14 through 2007, the It's Time promotion increases the savings provided through the Autodesk Legacy program... offering up to 45% discounts on select products including AutoCAD Inventor!  If you've considered upgrading your Autodesk 2007 or earlier products, there may never be a greater savings opportunity.  But you'll need to take advantage of this offer quickly; the It's Time promotion is only valid through January 14, 2011.

For additional detail on the Autodesk It's Time promotion or to receive a quotation with It's Time discounts, contact Karen Harper (karenh@strikersystems.com or 800-950-7862 ext 203), or contact your Autodesk reseller.

FABTECH 2010 - A Big Hit

It was good to see many of our customers at the recent 2010 FABTECH exposition in Atlanta.  The three-day show saw some 22,000 visitors, a 12% increase over the previous 200FABTECH 20106 Atlanta show.  With the newest STRIKER 2011 technology on display, the Striker Systems booth was a torrent of activity.  We expect FABTECH to be even bigger next year as the exposition returns to Chicago for the four-day show - November 13-16, 2011.  The Striker Systems team will be there in force, so be sure and mark your calendar for this 2011 event.

SS-Nest Authorization Code Warning

The issue I am going to address is for our SS-Punch and SS-Profile customers, specifically those who do not own the Striker SS-Nest module.  Have you ever run the Merge-Map Tools command in SS-Punch or accessed the Workflow Wizard in either SS-Punch or SS-Profile, and encountered the following dialog?

SS-Nest Auth Code Error Dialog

Only to think to yourself, "Hold it, I don't own SS-Nest!  Do I need to purchase it for this command to function?"

The good news is no, you do not need to purchase the SS-Nest module in order to use these features.  When these commands are run they check to see if SS-Nest is loaded, and if it is they take advantage of some of the SS-Nest features.  Where the problem comes in is when SS-Nest is loaded, but not authorized.  In this scenario these commands will detect that SS-Nest is loaded but cannot be executed, so they will present you with the above dialog.

Fortunately, there is an easy solution; don't install the SS-Nest module.  Unfortunately, it is easy to install SS-Nest (often inadvertently) if the SS-Nest toggle is checked during the initial Striker product installation.  So if SS-Nest is loaded but it has not been purchased (and therefore not provided a permanent authorization code), there are two methods that can be used to remove an unneeded Striker Systems module.  The first is the standard windows procedure.
  1. Go to the Windows START menu and activate the Control Panel.
  2. Locate and start the Add Remove Programs applet.
  3. In the list locate the current Striker installation
    - for STRIKER (stand-alone) product users this will be Striker 2011 - Sheet Metal CAD/CAM and Nesting
    - for AutoCAD users this will be Striker Systems Fab Professional 2011
  4. Select the correct entry in the applet - the Change button and Remove button will be displayed.
  5. Select the CHANGE button.
  6. An InstallShield Wizard dialog will be displayed.
  7. Select the Modify option from this dialog and then select the Next button at the bottom.
  8. When the Select Features dialog is displayed simply remove the check mark from the selection box for SS-Nest and then select the Next button.
  9. The SS-Nest module will be removed and you can select the Finish button to close the Wizard dialog.
  10. You can now close the Add Remove Programs applet and the Control Panel.
The second method is not an approved Windows method but it will work and, if there are issues with the Windows Installer subsystem may be the best way to alleviate the issue.  Simply locate the SS-Nest program folder and rename or erase it.  The SS-Nest Program folder will, by default, be located in the Program Files\Striker Systems\Striker 2011 folder and is called SSNEST.  The simple removal of this folder will not have any harmful effect on the standard functioning of the SS-Punch or SS-Profile product.

After SS-Nest has been removed by either of the two methods you will be able to activate and use the command functions that were causing the error dialog to be displayed.

"And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so?  It came without ribbons.  It came without tags.  It came without packages, boxes or bags.  And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore.  Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before.  What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store.  What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more."
