Winter Mulching in Cold Climate Gardens
This time of the year not many of us are thinking about our gardens, but now is the time of year that many of your perennial plants are the most voulnerable. Arctic temperatures, low humidity, wind, and even some weeds can do damage during this time. Winter mulching accomplishes two important tasks, it provides insulation for plants during cycles of freezing and thawing, and it also helps retain soil moisture. The mulch does this by acting in a way opposite to how most gardeners would think mulch is supposed to work. The basic idea is to keep the ground frozen by insulating it from the sun's warmth. This prevents those harmful freeze/thaw cycles from occuring.
Luckily, many of us don't need to brave the elements to mulch our gardens in the dead of winter. Snow is the perfect winter mulch! A layer of snow helps to both retain moisture and insulate the soil.

The Garden News is Changing
Don't panic, we're not making any major changes. As we go through the winter months, The Garden News will be sent out every other week until later this spring. However, during off weeks look for short emails highlighting sales, products, and other special announcements that can't wait until the next newsletter. These messages will be sent out via our "Special Sales and Coupons" and "Weather Alerts" lists. If you are not currently signed up for these list and want to be simply click on the "Update Profile/Email Address" link below.
