Bob's Weather Outlook
This August is shaping up to to be the hottest and driest August since 2001.  For the majority of the US this was the 12th consecutive week that temperatures were higher than the yearly average.  It look's like this year the Dog Day's of Summer will live up to expectation.  By the way, have you ever wondered why this time of the year is called the "Dog Days of Summer"?
To find out why it is called the dog days, you actually need to go outside at night in January!  In the night sky that time of year the constellation Canis Major (the big dog) is visible.  The bightest star in the sky is part of this constellation.  It is called Sirius, the dog star.
The ancient Romans thought that Sirius helped heat the Earth.  During late Summer, Sirius rises and sets with the Sun.  The Romans thought that the combined heat from Sirius and the Sun is what caused swealtering Summer days.  Today we know that it's just the tilt of the Earth.
