Dear colleague,

With a general election imminent, Start Strong's priority is to ensure that the care and education of young children is high on the policy agenda. Of course the economic crisis will dominate political debate. But both before the election and afterwards - when a new Government is preparing its Programme for Government - we will be telling politicians that early care and education must be part of the solution to our economic crisis. Where early care and education is of high quality and available to all young children, it brings huge benefits not just to children but to the economy. Investing in young children makes sound economic sense.

As part of the election campaign, Start Strong will shortly be launching our Manifesto for Growth, which we will be giving to all political parties, urging them to show commitment to young children.
ManifestoManifesto for growth

We have called our election manifesto a "Manifesto for Growth" because investment in early care and education is good for the growing child and good for the growth of the economy. An investment in children is an investment in our future. It's been shown that investment in young children is worth it, many times over.

In our Manifesto for Growth, we are calling on political parties to make young children a priority. Above all, we want all parties to give a commitment that in Government they will develop a national plan for the care and education of young children - to bring young children's care and education in Ireland up to international standards by 2020. The public finances may be in a terrible state, but a new Government can - and must - plan for the future, and plan for growth.

Our Manifesto for Growth also lists key actions that a new Government can take right now, at no cost:
  • Ensure Government funding only goes to quality services.
  • Make inspection reports publicly available on the internet.
  • Deliver services more effectively and more efficiently.

We will be launching our Manifesto for Growth shortly. In the meantime, you can see the manifesto by looking at our website here.

You can help too! Please use the manifesto in whatever way you can - show it to election candidates who knock on your door, email the link to friends and colleagues. If you would like copies of the printed manifesto, please email us and we will send you copies.

Children2020Children 2020: Planning Now, for the Future

The recommendations we make in our Manifesto for Growth all come from our report Children 2020: Planning Now, for the Future, which we launched in November. The report offers both a vision for the future of young children's care and education in Ireland and proposals for immediate actions. We have called it Children 2020: Planning Now, for the Future as our proposals aim to build the quality supports and services that children born in Ireland in 2020 will need to give them a positive start in life.

The report marked the end of the first phase of our Children 2020 project, which aims to develop policy recommendations on the basis of national and international research evidence and in consultation with stakeholders here in Ireland.

In the second phase of our Children 2020 project, we have commissioned Goodbody Economic Consultants to identify the economic costs and benefits of our proposals. We will be launching our economic analysis very early in the new Government's term of office, with the aim of shaping the new Government's policy priorities.

MembershipJoin us!

Many of you were involved in our consultation process or our other work during 2010, while others may simply have been following our e-newsletter. Whatever your level of involvement in the past, you may be interested in getting more involved in Start Strong in 2011, as we strengthen our efforts to make politicians take up the cause of young children in Ireland.

Start Strong is now asking all our supporters to consider becoming members. In recent months we have been formalising our governance structures so that we can become a stronger coalition of members: both organisations and individuals. If you or your organisation would like to become a member of Start Strong, please email us now.

In 2011 we will have two categories of membership:

Ordinary membership:
for organisations. We will be asking ordinary members to contribute €150 per year. Only ordinary members will be able to vote at our AGM.

Associate membership:
for individuals, and also for organisations outside Ireland or which will not be actively involved in Start Strong. We will be asking associate members to contribute €50 per year.

We are very aware of the financial pressure that most, if not all, of us are under at the moment, but feel that the contribution we are seeking is realistic and reasonable.

Parents: We are also really keen to increase the involvement of parents in 2011. If you are a parent and are interested in getting involved in our work, please email us now.
