Greetings!
This weekend, as all of you know, is Halloween! Tufts is celebrating in full swing, with Halloween on the Hill this Saturday from 11am to 3pm, to a spooky wind ensemble concert on Sunday at 3pm. Hopefully you all have your costumes and appetites for candy ready, and while you're celebrating, consider greening your Halloween traditions! Also, I've been getting some reports that some parts of the newsletters are sometimes illegible, and I am trying to sort this problem out. If you are encountering any problems reading or accessing the newsletter in any way, please email me (Jason.Merges@tufts.edu) with whatever is going wrong. I'd greatly appreciate the help! Also, don't forget that you can also click on the "having trouble viewing this email?" link at the top of each newsletter to get redirected to a website version. Stay Green!

OOS Goings On Around Campus
Eco-Reps
This week the Eco-Reps are busy planning their first large event - the Metcalf Green Room Certification Kickoff and Trashion Show on Thursday, November 4th at 8pm! Residents will learn how they can have their eco-friendly practices acknowledged as well as be entertained by some unique fashion.
Eco-Ambassadors October was waste and recycling week for Tufts Eco-Ambassadors. They not only learned the ins-and-outs of how to recycle at Tufts from Dawn Quirk, the Waste Reduction Program Manager, but they went on a tour to a zero-waste sorting facility in Boston! Click here for more pictures
Plus we recently got an update from FY10 Eco-Ambassador Carla Walsh who let us know what's happening in her office. You can read about her efforts and see what others have done in their offices here.
Are you helping your office become more environmentally conscious? We would love to hear about it! Email us at sustainabilityoffice@tufts.edu
Experimental Action: Shifting from Saying to Doing There has been much interest in the class from sustainability offices around the country and Dallase (who designed and taught the class last year) and Tina had the opportunity to give three different presentations about the class at two different conferences this month. The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education annual conference drew over 2000 sustainability professionals to Denver over the 10/10/10 weekend, whereas the Northeast College Sustainability Consortium annual conference provided a more intimate venue at McGill University in Montreal earlier this week.
STARS
With Rachael Wolber's transition to Eco-Rep coordinator, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) progress had been slowed down. However, last week we were happy to welcome TIE intern, Sarabeth Buckley, who moved across the hall to help us finish collecting the data. So, if you were one of the people contacted earlier this year - be warned - you'll be getting a gentle prodding soon!
Vegetables!!
This summer's CSA farm share program has been a big success with our lobby filled with around 43 'large' and 'small' boxes of fresh vegetables each Wednesday. In my estimation that adds up to food for well over 100 people. The summer season ended recently and this week saw the first drop off of the winter share season.

Screening of "Climate Refugees" and Climate Justice Panel Discussion
November 3, 2010 4:30pm, discussion at 6:00pm Barnum 104
- William Moomaw, professor at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy
- Sivan Kartha, senior scientist at the Stockholm Environment Institute
- Paul Kirshen, founder of the Water: Systems, Science and Society (WSSS) program
Climate Refugees has been called "an agent for social change", "a resounding wake-up call for every human", and "the most important documentary made in the last 30 years". Director Michael Nash became interested in mass migrations caused by climate change: people looking for water and food in dry regions of Africa and losing their homes to rising seawater in Bangladesh. For this documentary, he visited locations from Orissa, India, where the coastal village of Kanhapura has vanished, to the South Pacific island of Tuvalu, which is slowly being submerged by the rising ocean.
This event is co-sponsored by: Tufts Institute of the Environment, Tufts Environmental Alumni, Fletcher Green, The Africana Center, Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning & Peace and Justice Studies
