Joanna Morales Speaks to
Pediatric Oncology Social Workers

On Friday, May 13, Cancer Legal Resource Center Director Joanna Morales, gave a seminar on "Employment and Health Insurance Issues for Children, Young Adults, and Caregivers" at the Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers Annual Conference. Held in Atlanta, Georgia, the conference was attended by several hundred pediatric oncology social workers, clinicians, program managers, advocates and researchers. The conference aims to create and strengthen connections between individuals, groups, and organizations addressing the needs of those affected by childhood cancer. Monica Bryant Attends Komen Chicagoland Funding Awards

On Wednesday, May 18, Cancer Legal Resource Center Midwest Regional Director, Monica Fawzy Bryant, attended the Chicagoland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Funding Awards Celebration in recognition of the CLRC's first community grant award. As a grantee, the CLRC will conduct seminars and an awareness campaign in the greater Chicago area to educate the breast cancer community about cancer-related legal issues. The CLRC will also create a legal resource guide for people with cancer in Illinois to help navigate individuals through the many legal issues that may arise from a cancer diagnosis through survivorship as well as provide local resources that may help resolve these issues.

On Thursday, May 27, Paula Pearlman, Disability Rights Legal Center Executive Director, attended the Progressive Jewish Alliance (PJA) annual gala, "Living the Legacy," celebrating and advancing the Jewish pursuit of justice in America. This year's honorees were U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, a nationally recognized leader on the environment; Ralph Fertig, a 1961 Freedom Rider, organizer of the March on Washington, and social worker; and Mitch Kamin, a former president and CEO of Bet Tzedek Legal Services. The PJA engages Jews of diverse backgrounds in social justice work in their communities in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area.

On Monday, May 23, the Disability Rights Legal Center welcomed 36 law clerks and externs from across the country into our 2011 Summer Student Program. After a week of comprehensive training on the organization and the substantive areas of our work, students began program-specific training in the Civil Rights Litigation Program, Education Advocacy Program, and the Cancer Legal Resource Center. We are thrilled to have such bright and talented additions to the DRLC team!

Conference Brings Together Mental Health Community
  

The Meeting of the Minds Conference was held on May 11, 2011 in Garden Grove by the Mental Health Association. Maggie Hui, Community Outreach Program Coordinator, attended the event where she passed out information on DRLC's services to the mental health community. The conference brought together the full spectrum of the mental health community of Orange County, to raise awareness, increase cultural sensitivity, share information and resources, strengthen and build relationships, and improve patient care and quality of life for persons impacted by mental illness.

DRLC Offers Free Legal Clinic in Orange County

To better serve residents of Orange County, Community Outreach Program staff will hold office hours on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Dayle McIntosh Center in Garden Grove. That means this month we will host office hours at the center on June 8 and June 22. Come meet our staff and learn about laws protecting the civil rights of those with disabilities, and services available to them, including health care, special education, government services and more.
