March 2012 Header

Greetings!

The vernal equinox on March 20 marks the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere. Days will gradually become longer as the sun stays above the horizon just a little bit longer each day.

Use those new hours of daylight to explore your Metro Parks. There are opportunities to see secretive amphibians, welcome back migratory waterfowl and more!

See you on the trails,

March Outdoor Almanac

The mating melodies of wood frogs and spring peepers fill the air near wetlands. On rainy nights near 50 degrees, salamanders cross Sand Run Parkway to reach vernal pools, where they mate and lay eggs. Great blue herons add sticks to last year's nests in treetops and court their mates.

Amphibian Migration

Join a naturalist as we attempt to witness the annual amphibian migration across Sand Run Parkway. Programs occur when conditions are just right; salamanders prefer a light rain and temperatures above 45 degrees. Call 330-865-8060 after 4 p.m. to learn if a program is taking place that evening. The migration begins in March and often ends in early April.
