January Outdoor Almanac

Groundhogs (pictured) are true hibernators and can sleep for five months. Skunks go into a state of torpor, or inactivity, and often invite themselves into groundhog burrows. Temporarily "frozen" wood frogs are burrowed under leaf litter and survive by utilizing anti-freezing chemicals in their bodies. In a few months they will thaw out and restart their hearts and lungs.

Christmas Tree Recycling

We "recycle" trees, cleaned of all decorations and tinsel, by chipping them into mulch. You may drop off your live tree at the following locations through January 31:

Featured Trail: Old Mill Trail

The 1-mile Old Mill Trail in Furnace Run Metro Park leads hikers through beech-maple woods. Be sure to look for the Brush Family marker, which reads: "To all those who love as he loved the far sky and smiling land." View a YouTube video about this trail here.
