The Mark Minute:  Del Mar is Different.
President Mark Escamilla
President Mark Escamilla, Ph.D.

Del Mar College is again making great strides toward Access to Excellence, our strategic plan through 2014. This semester we're educating more than 12,300 credit students. We added a new associate degree in Mexican American Studies, and we're completing work on cutting-edge instructional facilities for drama, radio and television broadcasting.

Student Development has a renewed emphasis, with two new deans coming on board along with innovations such as online scholarship applications and document imaging systems to streamline admissions and registration processes.

I encourage you to look through this newsletter, and its many Web links, for news on the people, programs and processes that will make Del Mar College different in the coming months.

While welcoming students back to campus last week, I paused to talk a bit about the changes that Del Mar College is undergoing:

Marquee Day

Marquee Day at DMC, September 13

Exciting progress in our Fine Arts expansion takes center stage for DMC's Marquee Day event. At 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at the East Campus, we'll spotlight the current status of our Drama and Radio/Television Programs facility expansions and announce a new electronic, outdoor marquee display. At 11 a.m., architects Elizabeth Chu Richter and David Richter will unveil the design plan for our Music Building expansion.

Don't miss this milestone event! We'll gather on the East Campus at the cul-de-sac between the Venters Business Building and the Fine Arts Center construction site, which is accessible using the main entryway off Ayers Street.

Budget Documents Earn Seal of Approval

One of the College's strategic goals over the past year was to align our financial accounting systems with currently recognized best practices for public institutions. This resulted in the College's
first Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), Public Annual Financial Report (PAFR) and Distinguished Budget - three documents considered the "gold standard" for public financial reporting nationwide.

We are pleased to announce that each of these documents have received national recognition as meeting that "gold standard," positioning the College among the top institutions in the region and the country providing accountability and transparency of our financial and budget information.
