The Mark Minute
I'm Dr. Mark Escamilla, President of Del Mar College, and here are some things I'd like you to know about:
Regents and College Executive Team members have monitored the Texas Legislative process closely this spring as the state grapples with a $23 billion shortfall. The College is bracing for unprecedented budget reductions-ranging from $12 million to $14.4 million for Del Mar College.
As a result of the efforts of Regents and other College supporters, an amendment to the Texas House of Representatives' budget did restore partial funding for employees' and retirees' health insurance coverage. This adjustment allows community colleges to remain more competitive in attracting and retaining quality faculty members.
If you would like to stay abreast of developments impacting Del Mar College during the current legislative session, feel free to sign up for our Legislative Updates email list.
Plan to join me for the Third Annual Bernie's Famous Crawfish Boil, Friday, April 15, at the Ortiz Center. This fun evening of Zydeco music and Cajun food, inspired by DMC Foundation Trustee Emeritus Bernard Paulson, raises scholarship funds for our students.
Finally, I'm pleased to announce that Dr. Walter G. Bumphus, president of the American Association of Community Colleges, has agreed to provide the keynote address for our 75th Anniversary Commencement Ceremony, scheduled Friday, May 13, at the American Bank Center. Even if you don't have a DMC graduate to celebrate this year, I invite you to join us to hear the inspirational words of this nationally-recognized academic leader.
