Happy Holidays!
The beautiful color of fall leaves may be gone, but even the chilly days bring beautiful views of the river from the Zimmerman Center for Heritage. During November SGHA staff had the opportunity to speak to several local groups about our work as well as our building and more people are realizing the Zimmerman Center is open to the public for tours.
On the First Friday of each month, we offer guided tours between 10am-3pm. We do welcome visitors other times - our office hours are Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, during which time visitors may view the artwork and tour the home at their leasure. If you would like a guided tour other than a First Friday, please call in advance to schedule. Occasionally we are closed due to meetings or facility rentals, so if you are planning to visit with a group, or coming from a distance, please call in advance.
Holiday Hours:
SGHA offices and the Zimmerman Center will be closed for the holidays Friday Decemmber 24, 2010 through Monday, January 3, 2011. We will reopen Tuesday, January 4, 2011.

Lower Susquehanna Conservation Landscape (CLI) Initiative Update
On November 22, an informational meeting was held for the Lower Susquehanna Conservation Landscape Initiative (CLI). Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Secretary John Quigley gave an overview of the successes DCNR and local partners have accomplished to-date. He also urged those in attendance to continue the work in the Lower Susquehanna CLI even as DCNR transitions to a new administration in Harrisburg.
DCNR staff reviewed Pennsylvania's CLI Program and introduced the management team for the Lower Susquehanna CLI. As co-lead organizations for the CLI, SGHA and the Lancaster County Conservancy provided an overview of priority strategies based on goals for stewardship, connections, and sustainable economic development. The meeting also included an opportunity for attendees to provide input on implementation strategies to advance the Lower Susquehanna CLI. More information on, and opportunities to participate in, the Lower Susquehanna CLI will be provided in the near future.
2010 DCNR Grant Request Approved Earlier this fall, SGHA's 2010 Community Conservation Partnership Program grant application to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources was fully funded. This grant includes funding for SGHA to provide specific scopes of services, including support for the Lower Susquehanna Conservation Landscape Initiative (CLI), various Chesapeake Bay initiatives, and our ongoing PA Heritage Area initiatives. The grant also includes funding to secure targeted technical support and consultation services with partners for plans, studies and projects related to the Lower Susquehanna CLI.

Hidden Heritage
There are so many unique opportunities for heritage and outdoor experiences in the Susquehanna Gateway region. Visitors may not know about some of the "local secrets" and for life-long residents it's easy to forget about some of the great experiences right in our own backyard. We would like to share some of our discovered (or rediscovered) experiences.
Over the years, I've been fortunate to travel around the US and experience many breathtaking views - the Badlands in South Dakota, the Grand Canyon, Devil's Tower in Wyoming, the view from the Space Needle, and Sears Tower. In October I was thrilled to discover a breathtaking view, right in our own back yard - the view of the Susquehanna River from Turkey Hill.
As part of the dedication ceremony for the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) wind turbine project, we had the wonderful opportunity to view the river and surrounding towns from the top of Turkey Hill. I was excited to learn of the Turkey Hill Trail, which is open to the public and takes you from River Road to the top of Turkey Hill. The trail is managed by the Lancaster County Conservancy and trail information can be found here. The views were breathtaking and the weather could not have been more perfect.
Also as part of the event, we had the opportunity to visit the Reiber House, the historic home that LCSWMA preserved and moved to their land near Turkey Hill. The home has been beautifully restored and features artifacts, maps and photos of the home and renovation process. The Reiber House reminded me of a miniature version of the Zimmerman Center for Heritage.
I look forward to hiking the Turkey Hill Trail in the future and visiting the Reiber House again.
