PA Heritage Area's invite partnership with CVBs
In September, HeritagePA, our state Heritage Area organization, hosted a Heritage Happy Hour at the PA Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus annual conference, in York. At this event we shared our desire to enhance partnerships between Heritage Areas and CVBs. Such collaboration can help elevate heritage and cultural tourism products in our regions, further enhance our communities as tourism destinations and attract even more visitors.

There are so many unique opportunities for heritage and outdoor experiences in the Susquehanna Gateway region. Visitors may not know about some of the "local secrets" and for life-long residents it's easy to forget about the great experiences right in our own backyard. We would like to share some of our discovered (or rediscovered) experiences.
On Saturday October 2nd, SGHA staff had the unique opportunity to spend the day in the middle of the Veterans Memorial Bridge (also known by many as the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge) as part of the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce's (SVCC) annual Bridge Bust. The weather could not have been more perfect for a fall event.
It was facinating to observe not only the surrounding landscape from a different perspective, but also how people experience and react to being on the bridge. It seemed that the general concensus was while many of us drive over the bridge daily, few have actually walked it, let alone being on it without traffic (the event closes the bridge to vehicle traffic for the whole day). Many people stopped to take photographs of the river and commented on how beautiful it was. I particularly enjoyed getting a close up view of the old bridge piers off the north side of the bridge which I had only observed from shore, previously. What a wonderful way to see a piece of history!
We enjoyed the chance to share the day with local residents and visitors - 2010's bridge bust attracted a record 20,000+ attendees! I would encourage you to take a stroll across the bridge and experience not only the river, but the bridge itself, in a whole new way.
Some Bridge Facts: - The Bridge is approx 1.25 miles long - The current bridge is the 5th "Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge" - It is believed to be the longest concrete arch bridge in the world -The 2nd bridge was burned during the Civil War to keep Confederate troops from advancing across the river
