Thank you to all who participated in our first ever College For Kids Kick Off. It was a great start to Summer 2009 at Saddleback College.
For those of you who are not familiar with our College For Kids Program: This unique Program was developed to allow children ages 7-14 the exciting chance to experience real college life. Children have the opportunity to develop their own individualized class schedules from a wide range of offerings, including art, writing, reading, sports, theatre, foreign language, math, computers, science, and study skills. Classes are offered in two-week blocks, Monday through Thursday, June 22 through July 30.
We've highlighted below some College For Kids classes you might like to check out for your child(ren). You also can access information about additional class offerings by clicking on the appropriate subject link to the right. | College For Kids Parking
PARKING: Parking regulations are in effect 24-hours a day, seven-days a week.
EXCEPTIONS FOR COLLEGE FOR KIDS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
We have made special arrangements with our Campus Police Department to provide FREE parking in STUDENT SPACES in the areas and times indicated below. Free parking is a courtesy service during the summer strictly for Community Education programs. Participants/Presenters are responsible for any parking or traffic tickets received if you park in a lot at any time that is not authorized and stated. Free parking is available in STUDENT SPACES (white-lined spots) ONLY. AQUATICS (5/26 - 8/13): Free parking is available in Lot 4 (in front of the pool) or Lot 7, Monday - Thursday from 12Noon - 7pm and on Saturday from 8:00am - to 3:00pm . COLLEGE FOR KIDS (6/22 - 7/31): Free parking is available in Lots 1, 4A (pick up and drop off only), and 5A, Monday - Friday from 8:30am - 5:00pm and on Saturdays (5/30 - 8/8) from 9:00am - 11:00am. |
Destination Science
Destination Science combines innovative science projects (4/day), creativity challenges (1/day), outdoor games (3/day), character development (all day long), and unsurpassed customer service. Our goal is for each camper to leave with inner-science confidence and outer self-confidence. All camps are taught by bright, top-notch elementary educators and college students. Campers are grouped in age appropriate teams, 14 campers per team.

 Acting
Musical Theatre Workshop In this exciting workshop children will learn songs, choreography, staging, and blocking from various Broadway musicals. There will be ensemble numbers from 'Wicked' and 'High School Musical,' as well as featured dances from various musicals. At the end of the workshop the class will present a staged musical theater revue for family and friends.
Theatre Games You will work in your own age group in the class. Acting Express Productions will introduce you to the exciting world of acting. Robert Michael Conrad and the Acting Express staff will take you through the 'magic and fun' of acting. Learn and participate in 'improvisational acting games,' create a character in a play, audition for plays, and become confident in speeches at school. At the end of the second week, you will learn how to audition for and perform in commercials. Many past College For Kids students have gone on to appear in commercials and films. Don't miss the fun! A tape of the students' commercial will be shown to a S.A.G. agent for possible representation.

Art
Adventures in Animation Do you have an idea for a movie? Then join Movies By Kids in this 'Hollywood'-style studio class where students create, storyboard, and animate their own cut-out cartoons using the art of stop-motion animation. In addition, they will learn story structure, camera angles, and other creative filmmaking techniques. Working in groups of about four, students will operate digital video equipment and supply voices for their characters. By the end of class, they will have created their own animated short film. Movies By Kids will edit the movies professionally and provide a DVD for each student in the class (six weeks after the class ends).
Color Sticks For Young Artists Explore the use of color in an image-filled environment. Using oil pastels and colored pencils, you will complete two large pieces. Students should bring a shoebox (or similar container) to store their project supplies while in class.
Dare To Draw Anything!
This is a class for kids with little or no experience in drawing. We will be teaching basic pencil drawing techniques, observation skills, composition, positive and negative space, the use of depth and overlapping, perspective, and more. We will use fun props and have a great time.
Landscapes: Whimsical To Abstract Art Using soft pastels, oil pastels, watercolors, colored pencils, and more, we will have fun exploring the art of the landscape. We also will cover using masking fluids, using the white of the paper, and mixed media.
Ocean Animals
Dive deep into the ocean to find and paint killer whales, leaping dolphins, swimming seals, cuddly penguins, bright-colored fish, and more. We will use watercolors, soft pastels, colored pencils, and oil pastels.
Pen And Ink Art Magic Pick up those pens and let's get drawing! Students will develop their drawing and representational art skills and learn to overcome their fear of mistakes as they use various colors of ink. They will explore different volumetric forms and different techniques to prepare them for two major pieces they will create. Students should bring a shoebox (or similar container) to store their project supplies while in class.
Rain Forest Animals In this class, we will paint animals from different rain forests of the world. Using a variety of different art mediums, we will create tigers, colorful tree frogs, chameleons, and macaws, to name a few. We also will have informational handouts about each animal and how they enhance the rain forest.
Young Artist's Workshop Working with the seven formal art elements (line, shape, volume, space, texture, value, color) you can let your imagination soar. You will create two large pieces of art - one will be a realistic still life and the other will be semi-abstract. Let the artist in you come out! Computers
Digital Scrapbooking For Youth This class has it all: creative writing, digital photography, desktop publishing, keyboarding, and working with the Internet all rolled into one. Working online in a computer lab, students will learn how to upload their photographs or artwork (must be in digital format) into a personal publishing website where they will select a theme and plan their personal memory storybooks which will be professionally published in a library-bound book.This class is perfect for students creating books for class/club tours or trips (i.e. Washington D.C., choir tours, sports events, etc.)
Keyboarding On Personal Computers This hands-on workshop will introduce you to touch typing using the computer. Learn to type the fun, fast, easy way! Students must attend the first class meeting.

Math
Algebra For Children For students taking Pre-Algebra in the fall Review positive and negative numbers, order of operations, combining like terms, and solving basic whole-number equations. Learn how to solve one-step and two-step equations, and how to factor basic polynomials. You must know math fundamentals. Be prepared to do some work at home. Algebra For Teens - Level I For students taking Algebra I or Algebra IB in the fall (Note: For students taking Algebra IA in the fall, see our Algebra IA class). This class introduces concepts from the complete year's curriculum of Algebra I. Students will learn to solve equations with multiple steps, using both positive and negative numbers. You will work with polynomials, several common forms of factoring, and many more algebra concepts. You must have a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of math, as well as fractions, decimals, and pre-algebra. Algebra for Teens - Level IA Prerequisite: Must have completed Pre-Algebra. For students taking Algebra IA in the fall. Algebra IA covers the first half of the algebra curriculum, usually for 8th graders. These students will then take Algebra IB the following year. Students will have practice using positive and negative numbers and solving equations. Students will also work with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and factoring polynomials. Algebra For Teens - Level II Prerequisite: High School Algebra I and High School Geometry For students taking Algebra II in the Fall. This class is designed for the student who will be taking Algebra II in the fall. Students will review the concepts learned in high school Algebra I and apply them to the more challenging problems found in high school Algebra II. Bring a scientific calculator (not a calculating calculator) to class.
Introduction To Geometry For Teens Prerequisite: High School Algebra I For students taking high school Geometry in the fall. Designed for the student who has passed high school Algebra I and will take Geometry in the fall, this class covers learning how to write proofs for segments, angles, triangles, and more. We will use the Pythagorean theorem, area, volume, and trigonometry functions. Bring a ruler and calculator to class. Math II For students entering 5th and 6th grades in the fall. This middle school math class is designed to make math understandable. Topics covered are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. You must know long multiplication and long division.

Music
Advanced String Orchestra For all string players: Honors level 'Intensive'. Prerequisite: Minimum two years of private lessons, play in positions, school orchestra, honors, or permission from instructor. Students will receive one-on-one attention and will work in sectionals, small groups, and ensemble. There will be a recital the last day of class. Please bring your instrument, supplies, and a portable music stand.
Beginning Guitar For Kids Wow your friends and make some music! This class is for kids with little or no experience playing the guitar. Students will learn several chords, strum styles, and single string melodies. In addition, students will learn three classic rock songs. You must bring your own guitar to class. Classes are repeatable.
Beginning Violin You will begin playing songs on the violin the first day! No previous experience is required. This class is perfect for beginning violinists and for improving violin-playing skills for school orchestra. You will learn to read music in a fun and nurturing environment, with individual attention and group playing fun. There will be a recital the last day of class.
Chamber Music For All Prerequisite: Basic skill proficiency on instrument. Students will be matched by ability. Strings! Brass! Winds! Percussion!Experience the joy of making music together in small groups. Learn sight reading, ensemble playing, listening, and leadership skills while exploring chamber music literature. There will be a recital the last day of class.
Intermediate Guitar For Kids This hands-on workshop is for the young guitarist who has mastered the basics and is seeking a challenge. The exercises will be customized for the skill level and direction of the individual student. Topics include bar chords, lead guitar, music theory, and a new song each week. Reading
Developmental Reading For students who need help in improving reading skills. You will read high-interest works together in an encouraging and supportive class. You will build vocabulary, comprehension skills, and reading strategies that will make reading FUN! Light homework.
Developmental Reading For Teens This class is for students who need help improving their reading skills. Students will read high-interest text along with teacher-directed reading, journaling, self-selected reading, group activities, and literature analysis. This class offers valuable skills in a safe and fun environment as students prepare for high school and beyond. Light homework, including reading.
Young Reader's Workshop For the student reading at or above grade level, this exciting class will expand your world through the exploration of a wide variety of age-appropriate literature. In a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere, you will learn skills that will strengthen your independent reading abilities and literature comprehension. Light homework.

Study Skills
Let's Spell It Right! Become a super speller - a spelling magician. Imagine dramatically improving your child's spelling skills in a few hours. Now he/she can with Let's Spell It Right! - a fun class designed to improve any child's spelling skills. This phonics-based class is for any child who needs to improve or wants to become a powerful speller. Parents are welcome to attend. The instructor supplies all writing materials.
Memory Power And Study Skills Imagine your child with tremendous learning and study skills. Picture your child increasing his/her memory ten times, reading pages in seconds, reducing study time, and easily getting top marks in school. By learning a simple and fun technique, students will accelerate learning and reduce study time. Students will remember what they read, see, and hear, and improve math, note-taking skills, concentration, and remove absentmindedness!
Natural A's Any student can significantly enhance grades, self-confidence, and chances for scholarships and college admissions by performing academic skills in alignment with the brain's natural patterns. This makes note taking, reading, studying, memorizing, and test taking amazingly efficient. Also discover simple methods for understanding math and other subjects, optimizing focus and concentration, and preventing test anxiety. Students of all ages describe this class as 'awesome,' 'necessary,' and 'easy to understand.' The instructor, Curtis Adney, M.S., J.D., graduated at the top of his college class with a 4.0 GPA and earned a Juris Doctor degree from Brigham Young University. Parents are welcome to register and participate with their child.
Study Strategies For Teens Topics include: practical organizational skills to help you with your school work, as well as how to better manage your time; note-taking techniques (how to summarize and use symbols and abbreviations to stimulate recall of information); how to study for tests, strategies for taking tests, and dealing with test anxiety; improving reading comprehension; writing papers and essays.
Successful Study Strategies You will learn proven note-taking, test-taking, reading, comprehension, and time management techniques. You also will learn how to cope with test anxiety and how to develop a time-spaced study plan.

Writing
Creative Writing Students will read entertaining works from a variety of genres and use them as models to create their own writing. In a relaxed and encouraging environment, lessons will include: content, editing, drafting, revising, group response, teacher conferencing, presentation to class, and publication. Students will expand their current abilities as writers and experience the joy of being authors! Light homework.
Creative Writing For Teens This class is for students who want to enrich and broaden their writing skills in a fun and creative environment. Analyzing literature, T.A.G (title, author, and genre), poetry, and musical lyrics, students will create and write a 'fractured fairy tale' short story. During the two-week class, students will develop an accomplished portfolio of their works to keep. Light homework, including writing, is expected. English Composition Made Easy For Students Entering 5th, 6th, or 7th Grade In The Fall In a fun and supportive atmosphere, students will review grammar and language skills and learn techniques to write through systematic outlining and note taking. Topics include a review of spelling and sentence and paragraph construction, with an emphasis on spelling and using the right word or phrase. Listening exercises, brainstorming, and troubleshooting also will involve students in the intuitive and creative process of writing. Students will dissect short stories to illustrate the benefits of outlining. Students should bring a notebook, pencil, and dictionary/thesaurus to class. Interactive Writing Workshop This FUN, interactive writing workshop will stretch your child's imagination, and help him/her zap ideas onto the page. Through the use of theatre games, students will uncover the key to creating memorable characters (including super heroes and villains), learn how to incorporate conflict into their work, and discover what it takes to write a great story. The techniques learned in this workshop will help your child in all areas of creative writing. Students will illustrate their work, and at the end of the class, take home a unique, special journal.

Youth Aquatics
In addition to the College For Kids Program, Saddleback College is celebrating its 31st season of swim lessons for children. Lessons are available in Parent & Me (3-36 months); Tiny Tot (3-4 years); Beginners, Advanced Beginners, Intermediate, and Competitive Swim (5 years and older); and a variety of specialized programs, including Beginning Springboard Diving, Personalized Springboard Diving, and Junior Lifeguard Conditioning.
