The Arts Center is truly indebted to our volunteers who give so much of their time and talents throughout the year.

This month, we would like to extend a special "Thank You" to two very special people.

A big thank you goes out to Ginny Birney for all the time and effort she's given to the Arts Center during the summer! Ginny volunteers regularly at the front desk on Thursdays and is here to help out during special events, from the yard sale to teaching at our Arts for Kids camp. We appreciate Ginny's helping hands!

We would also like to recognize Wayne Thurman for his hard work and dedication in putting together the Forkland Arts and Crafts Exhibit last month. He thoughtfully identified the best artists that Forkland has to offer, present and past, and helped create a spectacular exhibit! Wayne's many hours devoted to the exhibit led to a great success!

The Arts Center is proud and honored to have such dedicated and caring volunteers!

GRAND HALL - Jack Cochran
"Seascapes and Mountain Scenes"

Jack Cochran joins the Arts Center this August as the featured artist in the Grand Hall. Jack Cochran hails from Lexington, Kentucky and his art takes many forms including drawing and watercolors, but is oil painting is his primary medium.

Cochran is a late-deafened man, therefore instead of using words, he uses the language of art as his visual communication mode. As Cochran states,"There is no language barrier or communication barrier in understanding and appreciating a beautiful piece of art, whether in a tonalist study, vibrant floral's, portraits or landscapes."

Art is Jack Cochran's language, which can certainly be seen through his collection of seascapes and mountain scenes. Each piece is carefully crafted from the subject matter to the choice of colors. Cochran's pieces are beautiful, affordable works that bring pleasure to any viewer's eye.

Jack Cochran studied art at the University of Kentucky through the Donovan Program for Scholars where he graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. Cochran also participates regularly in other art workshops and classes focusing on fine art painting. He enjoys studying the techniques of printing, screen prints, woodcuts, and monotype and hopes to continue studying new methods of fine art.

Cochran hopes to continue to study art in its many forms through art history and art philosophy classes. Recently he undertook the challenge of creating metal sculpture and is currently exploring three-dimensional art concepts.

His greatest challenge as an artist is to find a way to give back to the community. Cochran feels truly indebted to the University of Kentucky for the exceptional arts education he received. In order to "pay it forward," Cochran regularly volunteers as a teacher at Artists' Attic and the local YMCA's in Lexington.

Cochran's art can be seen in his studio at Artists' Attic in Lexington, Main Cross Gallery in Victorian Square in Lexington, and at Maple Tree Gallery here in Danville. All works in this month's exhibit are for sale with prices ranging from $250 to $700.

FARMERS NATIONAL BANK GALLERY - Bernice Wood

"Transparent Watercolors"

Bernice Wood, a native of Michigan, is a watercolor artist who moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 1966.

Oil painting was Bernice Wood's primary medium until 1990 when she enrolled in watercolor classes taught by Robert James Foose at the University of Kentucky. Wood took watercolor classes which proved to be very informative and added to her expertise as an artist. With her new found love for the medium, Wood continued her education through many workshops taught by prominent watercolor artists.

"I strive to portray a beautiful impression of flowers, a scene, or any special subject. The flow of watercolors and its ability to reflect light leads to glowing paintings when an artist can achieve this effect," describes Wood.

Wood's watercolors capture the viewer's attention through her attention to detail from the shading to the shape of each line. "Painting is an endless search for beauty portrayed on paper," Wood states.

Today Bernice Wood paints in her studio at the Artists' Attic in Lexington and teaches an ongoing watercolor painting class in the Donovan Program for Scholars at the University of Kentucky. Her art can be seen in Artists' Attic and in exhibits in other Lexington art galleries.

Bernice Wood's works in this month's exhibit are for sale with prices ranging from $150-500.

You're Invited!

Please join us for our August Exhibiting Artists' Reception featuring Jack Cochran and Bernice Wood on Thursday, August 11, from 6-8 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Lunch with the Arts

Sponsored by Little Oil Company

Wednesday, August 17, Noon-1 p.m. at the Community Arts Center

Featuring: Jon Carloftis-Landscape Design

Join us for August's Lunch with the Arts program featuring award-winning Kentucky landscape designer Jon Carloftis!

Whether your garden is a place of tranquility, a place for friends and family to gather, a place to pamper a host of plants and flowers, or simply a place to surround your home, the appropriate adornments can bring a sense of style to your garden.

In his presentation, Jon will outline the steps he takes to create gardens with various theme and intentions. Hardscape materials, plant material, furniture, lighting, decorations, water features, outbuildings, garden decorations - these items must be selected carefully and placed appropriately so as to complement your garden, not overpower it. Having a unique style is important for bringing out the personality of every garden and gardener.

During his presentation, Jon will share with his audience his every growing line of sustainable, earth-friendly garden products dedicated to beautiful and functional outdoor living.

About Jon Carloftis

Kentucky native, Jon Carloftis, award-winning garden designer, garden writer, television guest, author, and lecturer, is a great American gardener. His 23 year career in gardening began far from home in New York City where he became one of America's pioneers in rooftop / small space gardening.

Jon is the recipient of a landscaping design award, given for his overall body of work, from the Museum of the City of New York City. The Lauder family (of Estee Lauder fame); actors Julianne Moore, Mike Myers, and Edward Norton; producer Jerry Bruckheimer and wife Linda Bruckheimer - these are a few of Jon's recognizable clients.

Jon grew up on the banks of the Rockcastle River in South Central Kentucky, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It was there he began a love affair with nature.  He attended the University of Kentucky, graduating in 1986 with a B.A. degree in communications. He returned to study horticulture, landscape architecture and art history. Jon is the owner of the Rockcastle River Trading Company, a popular home and garden store located on his family's property in Livingston, Kentucky. The beautiful gardens, designed by Jon, that surround the Carloftis home and store have been featured in BMW Magazine, Country Home, Garden & Gun, Outdoor Rooms, and Southern Living.

In 1988 Jon moved to New York City to start his business. His first clients were noted art collectors Barbara and Eugene Schwartz. Word of mouth became his advertising vehicle, and demand for his services grew. In 1993 Jon moved to picturesque Bucks County, Pennsylvania, his current residence.  His home and gardens have appeared in Country Living, Country Gardens, Garden Design, Martha Stewart Living, and Metropolitan Home.
