The Arts Center is truly indebted to our volunteers who give so much of their time and talents throughout the year.

This month, we would like to extend a special "Thank You" to two very special people.

Our long-time Arts Center volunteer and founding member, Cynthia Frey served as our Coordinator of Volunteers for both of our blockbuster exhibits-dinosaurs and trains. She graciously took on the task of organizing and scheduling volunteers. We would not have been able to succeed without her help!

Gary Barkman often found enjoying coffee at the Hub or popping a wheelie on the side on the street, but this past January and February Gary served as the Chief Engineer for the All Aboard exhibit. Gary helped make each visitor's experience unique experience and he kept the trains running!

Needless to say, the Arts Center is proud and honored to have such dedicated and caring volunteers!

Check out this column each month for our feature volunteers!

GRAND HALL

High School Artist Project

Presented by Ephraim McDowell Health Community Services & Danville, Boyle County and DCA schools

The High School Artist Project, presented again this year by the Ephraim McDowell Health's Community Services Department, celebrates young talented artists from our area school systems with an outstanding

showcase of work produced high school students from Danville Independent, Boyle County and Danville Christian Academy.

The Community Service Department at Ephraim McDowell Health provided the canvas and art materials for the students to use for their projects. The students were assigned with the task of copying a work done by a master artist. The Community Service Department worked in collaboration with Carrie Snow, teacher at Boyle County High School, and Jeremy McGuire, teacher at Danville High School, who chose students both inside and outside of their classes to participate.

"Our hope is to give the teens an artistic experience where they can create artwork and showcase it to friends and family in the community," says Paul Muth, children's project coordinator, Ephraim McDowell Health. "This helps build their self-confidence and also contributes to the healing environment of the hospital."

You're invited! Please join us for the opening reception where you can meet the exhibiting student artists and bid on their artwork during a public reception and silent art auction on Thursday, May 5, from 6-8p.m. The work will remain on exhibit at the Arts Center through the end of May, followed by a display at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville for an entire year.

Lunch with the Arts

Wednesday, May 18, Noon-1p.m. at the Community Arts Center

Featuring: Constitution Squares Square Dance Club

The Community Arts Center's monthly Lunch with the Arts series continues in May featuring the Constitution Squares Square Dance Club. The program will consist of some square dance history, local club history, square dance music and even demonstration dancing!

What do you remember about square dancing? Most memories of square dancing include having to touch a girl while square dancing in P.E. class, women with big stiff hairdos, crinoline petticoats, full skirts and shoes to match, men with huge belt buckles, cowboy boots and a pastel colored cowboy shirt that matches his lady's dress, Hank Williams singing country music, and dance steps that require intricate footwork.

Square dancing isn't rocket science but it does require a certain amount of mental concentration and is said to be good for your health! Come see the Constitution Squares Square Dance Club as they provide a unique demonstration of square dancing to many forms of music including country and western, rock, jazz, gospel and more!

About Constitution Squares Square Dance Club

Constitution Squares was formed in the early 1970's by Garland Vest who was the caller. It grew and evolved over the years and currently has approximately 55 members.

Constitution Squares Square Dance Club dances the third Saturday of each month. The club also gives lessons on Monday nights, with a new beginner's class starting this September.

There are many square dance clubs throughout the region including three in Lexington and one in Nicholasville. A new club was recently formed in Stanford too. Dancing is available every weekend of the month within an hour's drive of Danville!
