November Exhibits GRAND HALL
Mark Wilhelm: "Apocalypse Meow"
Mark Wilhelm's "Apocalypse Meow" exhibit was met with great enthusiasm at October's opening reception and it continues to draw people to the Arts Center! His contemporary style and subjects are both exceptional and charming, complimented by his sense of humor offered in the art works' captions. "I realize that naming an art show Apocalypse Meow is pure sensationalism, but according to a sign toting pessimist I saw alongside the road, this will be the last art show I have time for," claims Wilhelm in his artist's statement.
Wilhelm's natural talent separates him from his folk art peers especially when it comes to creating an entire show. Most artists tend to gather pieces, put them all in an exhibit space, and call it a show, whereas Wilhelm creates pieces that work together as a collection and establish fluidity throughout the entire exhibit. "Apocalypse Meow" consists of 25-30 works ranging from charcoal drawings mixed with watercolors, oil paintings on canvas, and a few clay sculptures all for sale ranging from $50-$500.
"What's wrong with the world these days? That's what most people are asking," states Mark Wilhelm, "and I'm pretty sure that if it could talk, your table lamp would ask too. It's just that sort of distraction that drives me to do art. I can't tell you what it is but I can tell you what it isn't."
One of the most pleasing aspects of the show is that Mark Wilhelm doesn't take himself too seriously, which can certainly be seen in his works Roofus (pictured) and Crab Soup. Needless to say, Wilhelm's work speaks for himself, "My future art goals involve attempting to meld romanticism and pop art together into a new art form that makes you want to fall in love with your dishwashing detergent... Again."
FARMER'S NATIONAL BANK GALLERY
Horizon: Contemporary Landscape Juried Show
The Arts Center's first juried show, Horizon: Contemporary Landscape received 148 entries from 13 different states including Florida, Virginia, and Texas. For most of us who do not understand the significance of a juried show, it is much more notable than an open show because it has a judge or "juror" who accepts or declines works submitted by the artists based on the theme of the show, technical skills, creativity, and other qualifications set forth by the show venue.
Each of the 33 works accepted into the Horizon Contemporary Landscape juried exhibit range in size and media. Juror Sheldon Tapley's main goal was to select a well-rounded exhibit that showcases a broad range of artistic style and interpretation and he accomplished just that!
The Horizon Contemporary Landscape juried exhibit is an opportunity for artists to display their work, and more importantly for the public to recognize the outstanding artists within the community, throughout the state, and across the nation. It's a chance to see today's artists at their best and the Community Arts Center is certainly proud to host of these works!
LOCKHART GALLERY Gathering Artists' Collaboration
Recently the local Gathering Artists group decided to collaborate on a piece of art for the Lockhart Gallery, which consists of panels each following the theme of Nature. The Gathering Artists are a group of young and old, amateurs and professionals, all with a fond passion for art. Whether their love is in acrylics, oils, or textiles and anything in between, they meet on Saturday mornings to discuss where their art can make an impact next on individual or collaborative levels. This month, they are making their statement right here at the Arts Center! Make sure to check out their individual pieces that come together to form a single unique piece throughout the room.
Do not miss your last chance to meet Mark Wilhelm during the Downtown Gallery Hop, Friday, November 12, from 5:30-9p.m. Wilhelm and Brandon Long will provide musical entertainment inside the Arts Center during the event. We hope to see you there!

Lunch with the Arts Wednesday, November 17, Noon -1p.m.
Featuring: Centre Nest
Join us for our next Lunch with the Arts program featuring Centre Nest for an exciting and informative session on Mayan Ikat and Backstrap Weaving. Ikat is an ancient warp, or weft-resist dyeing process. Backstrap Weaving, a traditional technique passed down through generations of Mayan women, is a labor-intensive method of weaving textiles by hand by sitting on the ground with a loom attached to a tree at one end and around the weavers' back at the other. Both crafts are used by Nest microbarter clients in the Guatemalan Highlands to create unique handcrafted items for export to the United States. Come and learn about the processes of Ikat and Backstrap Weaving and how these two crafts are helping impoverished women in developing countries shift from poverty to self-sufficiency.
About Nest
Nest is a non-profit organization that empowers female artists and artisans in developing countries through their unique microbarter model. Nest provides skilled women access to microloans for the purpose of launching or maintaining art or craft-based businesses. Clients are then encouraged to repay their loans in merchandise, which Nest then markets and sells in the United States. This model allows Nest to offer loans free of interest and gives clients access to western markets. Nest provides training in business and design, product development advice, and links clients with buyers in the United States and elsewhere.
"Nest's mission is to use the preservation of ancient artistic tradition to help poor female craftswomen launch small art or craft-based businesses, and both Centre and greater Danville have been wonderfully receptive to us," states Centre student Morgan Lynn. "Our ultimate goal is to have attendees understand the purpose of Nest and to appreciate Nest's work and unique approach to international development. We want to inspire the residents of Danville with the exquisite crafts made by our artisans, and we want them to come away with a new knowledge of the world of art and craft in developing regions."
To reserve a catered box lunch ($10), make your reservation online by 5p.m. Monday, November 15, by clicking here or call to order: (859) 236-4054. Participants also may bring their own lunch with $5 admission at the door.
Every third Wednesday of the month, the CAC will present a featured artist who will present and demonstrate his or her work, with time available for discussion with the artist. The monthly arts series will feature everything from literary arts to performing, theatrical and visual arts.

CAC Arts Education
BELLY DANCING - Weekly Sessions, Mondays 7-8p.m. Middle Eastern Dance (more commonly known as Belly Dance) is a traditional dance rich in history that gained American popularity in the burlesque shows of the 20's and again with renaissance festivals in the 80's. Many different styles have evolved from the traditional form, but one thing has become apparent in all of them: shaking your fanny is good for you! This dance form, unlike hopping on the tread mill at the gym, gets your heart pumping & engages arms, mid-section, bottom, and thighs to give attention to muscles often ignored. Its a great way to get energized & have fun and is excellent for any skill level since you begin with a basic move & add difficulty for a more intense work out as you become more comfortable with the steps. Making time for yourself shouldn't be a luxury, so come join us, shake out the stress, and find your own inner diva!
