October Exhibits GRAND HALL
Mark Wilhelm: "Apocalypse Meow"
'What's wrong with the world these days?' That's what most people are asking and I'm pretty sure that if it could talk, your table lamp would ask too. It's just that sort of distraction that drives me to do art, states Mark Wilhelm, "I can't tell you what it is but I can tell you what it isn't."
Mark Wilhelm, from right next door in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, is one of those rare artists you find who has a sense of humor that is embodied in his work.
Wilhelm titled his show, "Apocalypse Meow", for several reasons, but you'll have to read his artist's statement in the exibit to find out why. Wilhelm's natural talent separates him from his folk art peers especially when it comes to creating an entire show. "Apocalypse Meow" consists of 25-30 works ranging from charcoal drawings mixed with watercolors, oil paintings on canvas, and some of his clay sculptures all for sale between $50-$500. Needless to say, Wilhelm's work speaks for itself, "My future art goals involve attempting to meld romanticism and pop art together into a new art form that makes you want to fall in love with your dishwashing detergent... Again."
FARMERS NATIONAL BANK GALLERY Horizon Contemporary Landscape Juried Exhibit
We are more than excited to announce our very first juried exhibit at the Arts Center! Our juried show, Horizon Contemporary Landscape, received 148 entries from 13 different states! It has been an overwhelming success and we know you'll think so too as soon as you see the accepted entries, varying in all media, shapes, and sizes. All we can say is WOW!

A juried show is much more notable than an open show because it has a judge or "juror" that accepts or declines works submitted by the artists based on the theme of the show and other qualifications set forth by the show venue.
The 33 works that were accepted into the Horizon Contemporary Landscape juried exhibit range in size and media, which were both criteria juror Sheldon Tapley was looking for when examining the works."People often assume that the juror will want to see work like his or her own, however that is not the case with this exhibit," says Tapley. The Horizon Contemporary Landscape juried exhibit is not just another opportunity for artists to display their work, but for the public to recognize the outstanding artists within the community, throughout the state, and across the nation from California to Maryland. It's a chance to see today's artists at their best and the Community Arts Center is certainly proud to be the host of these works and have their very first juried exhibit that is nothing less than a great success!
LOCKHART GALLERY Gathering Artists' Collaboration
Recently the local Gathering Artists group decided to collaborate on a piece for the Lockhart Gallery, which consists of panels each following the theme of Nature. The Gathering Artists are a group of young and old, amateurs and professionals, all with a fond passion for art. Whether their love is in acrylics, oils, or textiles and anything in between, they meet on Saturday mornings to discuss where their art can make an impact next on individual or collaborative levels. This month, they are making their statement right here at the Arts Center! Make sure to check out their individual pieces that come together to form a single unique piece throughout the room.

Featuring: Elizabeth Orndorff
Danville native, Elizabeth Orndorff, worked in advertising and public relations before turning to fiction and playwriting through which she has made her claim to fame! After writing a novel that failed to impress agents, she turned to short story writing and eventually won Boulevard magazine's fiction competition with Why I Sold My Baby at the Wal-Mark in 2005. Then came playwriting. Join us as Elizabeth Orndorff shares her experiences of plays and playwriting with us, including the secrets about where she finds her subject matters!
About the Artist, Elizabeth Orndorff
Elizabeth Orndorff has degrees from Grove City College (PA), University of Georgia, and University of Kentucky, where she taught journalism while in graduate school.
Orndorff's play Death by Darkness, set in Mammoth Cave in 1842, won the International Mystery Writers Festival in 2007 and the Southern Playwrights Competition in 2008. In 2009, Elizabeth Orndorff studied with Lee Blessing at the Sewanee Writers' Conference where she worked on a play about Rosalind Franklin and the discovery of the DNA double helix.
In July 2010, Orndorff's comedy The Dillinger Dilemma, based on the rumor that John Dillinger visited Danville in 1934, set attendance records at Pioneer Playhouse. After such success she continued to write and created a comed,y High Strangeness that opened the season at West T. Hill Community Theatre right here in Danville this fall.
Elizabeth Orndorff recently won a Wurlitzer Foundation Fellowship to live and write plays in Taos, New Mexico, during January through April of 2010. There's no better way to celebrate the success of her most recent work, High Strangeness, than to have Elizabeth Orndorff share personally with us of the tribulations a triumphs that happen throughout playwriting!
To reserve a catered box lunch ($10), make your reservation online by 5p.m. Monday, October 15, by clicking here. Participants also may bring their own lunch, with $5 admission at the door.
