GRAND HALL
Bill Griffin: Nature Photography

"I have been fortunate in life to have enough leisure time and passion to focus my interest toward image making. Throughout this span, very generous people have recognized and facilitated my photographic instincts. I love traveling and pursuing the next subject or assignment which keeps this 'flame of recognition' going," states photographer Bill Griffin.

"I have been a photographer since 1981, cutting my teeth in the beautiful natural landscapes of east Tennessee. IN 1984, I was introduced to commercial assignment photography shortly after relocating to the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. My business has evolved to shoot for a number of regional companies along with a growing stock photography business. I travel throughout the U.S. regularly and Europe every few years." He likes to travel lightly with only his digital format cameras, lighting gear, and wireless access with his laptop.

Bill Griffin's distinguished photography will be on display right here at the CAC through September. His extraordinary works and ability to capture moments like the one above will make you think twice before you ever leave your camera at home again.

FARMERS NATIONAL BANK GALLERY
Kentucky Professional Photographers Association (KPPA)

We are delighted that the members of the Kentucky Professional Photographers Association (KPPA) are displaying their unique portrait photography with us through September!

Almost everyone knows how to use a camera-you simply point and shoot. It's so easy that children can even master those two steps, but when it comes to photography as an art form, leave it to the professionals like the members of KPPA. Having mastered techniques beyond proficiency, these artists capture the raw beauty of each individual beyond the everyday glance.

This is your chance to see portrait photography at its best, and you will find that photography is not just as straightforward as clicking and shooting. The KPPA members capture the depth and stunning emotion within their subjects, leaving the audience with much more to be desired.

The Community Arts Center is proud to be the home to such refreshing professional and outstanding photography from across the state for the next two months.

The CAC will host our Exhibitng Artists' Reception on Thursday, August 12 from 6-8p.m. It is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and we encourage you to come by and offer your congradulations to these photographers and see some outstanding work!

Lunch with the Arts
Wednesday, August 18, Noon -1p.m.
Featuring: Mary Beth Touchstone

Join us August 18 as we welcome our very own Mary Beth Touchstone, as she shares "7 Steps to More Successful Photography" with us! Everyone has one - a camera, that is. It can be a camera in you cell phone, a point & shoot, or a 24 megapixel professional camera. No matter the equipment, with "7 Steps to More Successful Photography", you can improve your success with photography.  Mary Beth will display some of her own work and talk about why she did what she did and what she'd do differently next time.  And she'll share some professional tips to help you create memorable images of your own.

About the Artist

Mary Beth Touchstone is a strong left-brained thinker but with a deep and abiding appreciation for the arts.  Though she had a long and successful career at JPMorgan Chase in their technology and accounting departments, she has found peace through the years by creating beautifully smocked garments for her children.  But, it has been through photography, specifically portrait photography, that Mary Beth has been able to marry her love for technology and art - to find her true passion.

Mary Beth taught evening adult education photography courses over 20 years ago but ultimately left that job for another - raising 3 lovely daughters. She's advanced her career in accounting and then technology with SunTrust Bank and JPMorgan Chase all the while documenting her family through photography. In 2007 she took early retirement from Chase. This freed her to follow her dream to study portrait photography with several Portrait Masters and the Professional Photographers of America.

In early 2009, Mary Beth and her husband moved to Danville to prepare for retirement. Mary Beth works full time as the Executive Director of the Community Arts Center and her husband, Larry Fitch, continues to work remotely to Houston.

Now a Certified Professional Photographer, Mary Beth has a limited clientele list and chooses to volunteer her time and photography skills with two organizations:

1. "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep", a service offering remembrance photography for families in need and
2. Kentucky Art from the Heart, providing high quality portraits for children seeking permanent homes as part of Kentucky's Special Needs Adoption Program.

To reserve a catered box lunch ($10), make your reservation online at least 24 hours in advance by clicking here. Participants also may bring their own lunch, with $5 admission at the door.

lunch with the artsEvery third Wednesday of the month, the CAC will present a featured artist who will present and demonstrate his or her work, with time available for discussion with the artist. The monthly arts series will feature everything from literary arts to performing, theatrical and visual arts.

Horizon exhibitCAC TO PRESENT FALL 2010 JURIED EXHIBIT
The CAC is announcing a call to artists for its "Horizon" Contemporary Landscape juried exhibition. Nationally-known artist and Stodghill Professor of Art at Danville's Centre College Sheldon Tapley will serve as juror. Artists are asked to submit work (both two-and three-dimensional) that reflects and expresses the theme of contemporary landscape, while demonstrating creativity, strength of execution, and overall artistic excellence. Selected works will be on display at the CAC during the months of October and November 2010. All visual media will be considered, but must have been completed since January 2007 and not previously shown in any other CAC exhibitions. Requirements include a $25 entry fee for 1-3 works or $35 for up to six entries. $500 will be awarded for best in show.
Download complete details and entry form here. Deadline for entries is August 31, 2010.

For more information and to download official entry forms for both the Mural contest and the Horizons Juried Show, visit
