Lockhart has been drawing and painting for much of her life and finds the joy in her artwork is drawn mainly from the world and people around her: "Life experiences, travels and meeting interesting and creative people continue to inspire and educate," she says.Lockhart also explains that her work reflects the things she loves most in life, as well as those things that intrigue and capture the imagination. FARMERS NATIONAL BANK GALLERY Works by Patrick Fretz
The stunning colored pencil creations of Patrick Fretz will be on display at the Community Arts Center from mid-May through the end of the month. Fretz, an award winning artist, worked as a graphic artist in California before relocating to Kentucky, which he now calls home and his main source of inspiration: "In Kentucky, I've discovered a virtual artist playground -- from the rugged cliffs of the palisades to the tranquil pastures of the numerous thoroughbred farms. Inspired by two hundred year old architectural gems juxtaposed with their current counterparts, I began creating art in colored pencil, which has become my true passion. This is now my Kentucky home..." More than twenty pieces of Fretz's art in colored pencil will be displayed at the CAC, all of which are available to buy at a range from $250 to $500.

PUTTING ON THE FINISHING TOUCHES...
Marketing Director Amy Wise signs off
Amy Wise rounds out her tenure at the CAC in May, recently announcing she will be handing over her post as Marketing Director as she makes a career move within the community. Wise, who has an established background in the marketing and communications arena highlighted with a love for the arts, feels her time at the CAC reflects accomplishment and great strides in helping to build the framework for a compelling and active arts community. With the CAC at the helm, Wise feels Danville/Boyle Co. is well on its way to becoming a recognized landmark for the arts in Kentucky. "My goal at the CAC has been to engage and build interest in the arts, from all segments of our region -- in turn, helping to create a strong 'arts' identity for Danville," said Wise. "I'm proud of what we've accomplished thus far, as we've certainly established momentum for a thriving arts scene." And, while she may be handing over the wheel, Wise says she definitely wants to stay along for the ride. "The arts need our support, and I'll continue to be there to encourage the work of the CAC... I hope others will do the same."

Lunch with the Arts
Wednesday, May 19 @ Noon
Featuring: Judith Jia, Ceramics
Join us May 19 as we welcome Judith Pointer Jia, an associate professor of art at Centre College, for a lunch-time presentation and ceramics demonstration during our next serving of Lunch with the Arts. Judith's presentation will include a discussion surrounding her nationally-renowned artwork and a demonstration on the process of constructing her work out of soft slabs of clay.
Judith Pointer Jia is an associate professor of art at Centre College where she has taught ceramics and drawing since 1998. Jia holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kansas and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.
Jia's artwork is created from fine porcelain and stoneware. Her forms are delicate slab constructions that are often closed and seem full of air. A variety of subtly colored glazes and stains envelop the forms. About her artwork she states, "I have an appreciation for subtlety that I attribute to having grown up on the Great Plains of Kansas. To find beauty there is not easy. Only after leaving did I realize how my eye had been trained to find lasting aesthetic pleasure in things seemingly commonplace. I find beauty in geometric forms and I find beauty in character-giving imperfections. A seam that has opened slightly during the firing, or an edge that retains its freshly cut appearance are examples of clay displaying its intrinsic beauty."
Her work has been chosen for exhibition and won awards in several national competitions including Prevailing Winds, Current Trends in Contemporary American Ceramics, at Young and Constantin Gallery in Wilmington, VT and the Wichita National All Media Craft Exhibit, at the Wichita Center for the Arts. A piece was recently shown at the Gaolin International Biennial Ceramic Exhibition at the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in China. She regularly exhibits her work at the Ann Tower Gallery in Lexington and Santa Fe Clay in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
To reserve a catered box lunch ($10), make your reservation online at least 24 hours in advance by clicking here. Participants also may bring their own lunch, with $5 admission at the door.
Every third Wednesday of the month, the CAC will present a featured artist who will present and demonstrate his or her work, with time available for discussion with the artist. The monthly arts series will feature everything from literary arts to performing, theatrical and visual arts. |
