| DINOSAUR EXHIBIT EXTENDED THRU MARCH 2010!
DINOSAURS: THE BIG PICTURE
Featuring The Hankla Collection
Exhibit sponsored by Commonwealth Cancer Center
From January to early March, more than 8500 visitors and school students have visited the exhibit "Dinosaurs: The Big Picture" at the Community Arts Center. Due to this great response and the demand to accommodate more group tours and school field trips, this blockbuster exhibit has been extended through March 26, also adding an extra weekday open to the public for touring. "The Dinosaur exhibit has been a hit in every sense of the word," said Amy Wise, Marketing Director at the Community Arts Center. "The impact of this exhibit goes far beyond the 'wow' factor you experience when you walk in the front door." "It's been a major boost in terms of visibility for the CAC, with a value-added lift for tourism locally," she continued. "The exhibit has drawn mulititudes of visitors to Danville from throughout the state and beyond, each taking in the dinosaurs, then spending dollars at our local restaurants and businesses. It's been a great thing for all of us and, thanks to our sponsors Commonwealth Cancer Center and Jack and John Hankla, as well as our dedicated team of volunteers, we're happy to be able to extend this fascinating showcase another month." EXTENDED MARCH SCHEDULE
If you haven't had the opportunity to visit this phenomenal exhibit, it's not too late! Throughout March, the exhibit will be open to the public with admission Tuesdays through Sundays (through March 26). The March group tour schedule is also now open to accommodate additional field trip and group tour reservations. Click here to schedule your group now! March Public Hours of Operation:Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday - 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday - 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Saturday - 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Sunday - 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Jack and John Hankla, a father-son team from Danville, have amassed an unrivaled private collection of fossils and life-sized cast skeletons - a prehistoric pastime inspired by science, art, and a shared passion for paleontology that has led them around the world ... and now back to Danville to share their amazing collection with you. For much more on the exhibit, click here... Fluorescent Minerals: The Settles Collection The second level of the CAC features a special collection from Danny Settles, a life-long mineral collector from Boyle County who shares his extensive collection of fluorescent minerals from around the world - from Afghanistan to the florescent capital of the world Franklin, NJ -- as well as from local quarries in Lexington and Georgetown. Most of these minerals are unremarkable under sunlight or tungsten light, but when held under ultra violet lights, they glow with beautiful and radiant colors. Visit for an amazing "dark room exhibit" featuring the Settles' Fluorescent Mineral Collection as part of the dinosaur exhibit.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Are you interested in helping with the dinosaur exhibit? The CAC is in need of volunteers during the exhibit's March duration, including docents or floor monitors who assist children with activities, greet visitors or lend a hand in the gift shop. If you're interested in volunteering - as much or as little as you can - please contact us at 236-4054 or info@communityartscenter.net. |

Covell's Dinosaur 'Soundscape' sets the stage
As you explore the incredible specimens on view in "Dinosaurs: The Big Picture," be prepared to be swept away to prehistoric lands by haunting "dinosaur growls" and various nature sounds set to an original "soundscape" composition, courtesy of CAC music instructor and composer Jack Covell. This creation was part of the CAC's attempt to provide a "multi-sensory experience" through the exhibit. And, Covell's composition does not disappoint. A musical virtuso with 30 years of performance and recording experience in all genres, Covell single-handedly conceived, wrote and recorded this original "soundscape" designed to complement the Hankla dinosaur collection. In the piece, the sounds chronicle the development of the prehistoric era, inspiring the imagination with four breathtaking movements.
Purchase your own copy in the Gift Shop! The CAC Gift Shop is currently stocked with all-things-dinosaur, including books, videos and gifts in all price ranges, amazing fossil finds and other must-have dinosuar souvenirs - including Covells' "Soundscape" CD! |
| Lunch with the Arts
Wednesday, March 17 @ Noon at The Presbyterian Church, Danville
Featuring: Jeff Jones, Pipe Organ - "A Bach's Lunch"
Join us March 17 as we welcome acclaimed pipe organist Jeff Jones for our next installment in the Lunch with the Arts series. As Jones explains, this "King of Instruments" lives and breathes and will come to life for Lunch With the Arts, this month held at The Presbyterian Church of Danville. The program will explore the working of the 1999, Opus 35, Taylor & Boody mechanical action pipe organ. In many ways this organ is similar to the 300-year-old instruments played by J. S. Bach. This instrument is recognized around the country as one of the finest of its kind in this region. Come and learn about the history of organs and organ building. You will have a chance to hear the organ demonstrated and you will be able to "crawl" through the instrument and view its many pipes and moveable parts!
About the Artist
Jeff Jones has served as organist for The Presbyterian Church and Centre College for almost 15 years. He is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. He is an author, teacher, church musician, and recitalist. To reserve a catered box lunch ($10), make your reservation online at least 24 hours in advance by clicking here.
