Dinosaur Announcement

One of the largest private dinosaur collections in the country belongs to a father and son team from Danville - a duo inspired by science, art and a shared passion for paleontology that has led them around the globe acquiring anunrivaled private collection of prehistoric fossils and life-sized cast skeletons.

While the Hanklas are quick to note this "prehistoric pastime" is all for the benefit of science and the fun of sharing their fossilized finds with others, John and Jack Hankla have exhibited their amazing acquisition in museums around the nation... and in January and February 2010 they'll bring it home for a must-see display at the Community Arts Center (CAC) in Danville. From the vaults of the Hankla collection comes a new exhibit, "Dinosaurs: The Big Picture," presented by exhibit sponsor Commonwealth Cancer Center.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Presented with the arts in mind, "Dinosaurs: The Big Picture" will engage visitors' interest in the arts as they explore "the final chapter" of dinosaurs on loan from the Hankla collection. More than ten "creative stations" will lead participants through the multi-dimensional exhibit as they sketch, draw, sculpt and design their own prehistoric creations inspired by the incredible specimens on view. Literally every space of the facility will be filled with a global selection of prehistoric life-sized dinosaur skeletons and reptiles from the Cretaceous period (145-65 million years ago), including the awe-inspiring Tyrannosaurus Rex! Imagine the creative possibilities as visitors encounter the diversity of Cretaceous life and the incredible range in shape and size of these creatures. From flying reptiles to the famous Mongolian fossil, and the velociraptor, locked in combat with its prey, protoceratops, experience a prehistoric picture as it comes to life from the pages of science to the medium of art.

Among the related planned activities:
·         Interactive Art Stations: sketch, sculpt, design or create a story about
          dinosaurs!
·         DINO DIG: find your own fossils!
·         Fluorescent minerals (dark room) exhibit, on loan from the Settles Collection
