| DINOSAUR EXHIBIT EXTENDED THRU MARCH 2010!
DINOSAURS: THE BIG PICTURE
Featuring The Hankla Collection
Exhibit sponsored by Commonwealth Cancer Center
In January and early February alone, nearly 5000 visitors and school students from throughout the state and beyond have taken in this fascinating dinosaur experience at the CAC! Due to this overwhelming response and the demand to accommodate more school field trips, "Dinosaurs: The Big Picture" has been extended through March 2010! If you haven't had the opportunity to visit this phenomenal exhibit, it's not too late! The exhibit is open to the public with admission Wednesday thru Sunday. The March group tour schedule is also now open to accommodate additional field trip reservations. Click here to schedule your group now!
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT Jack and John Hankla, a father-son team from Danville, have amassed an unrivaled private collection of fossils and life-sized cast skeletons - a prehistoric pastime inspired by science, art, and a shared passion for paleontology that has led them around the world ... and now back to Danville to share their amazing collection with you. For much more on the exhibit, click here...
Fluorescent Minerals: The Settles Collection The second level of the CAC features a special collection from Danny Settles, a life-long mineral collector from Boyle County who shares his extensive collection of fluorescent minerals from around the world - from Afghanistan to the florescent capital of the world Franklin, NJ -- as well as from local quarries in Lexington and Georgetown. Most of these minerals are unremarkable under sunlight or tungsten light, but when held under ultra violet lights, they glow with beautiful and radiant colors. Visit for an amazing "dark room exhibit" featuring the Settles' Fluorescent Mineral Collection as part of the dinosaur exhibit.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Are you interested in helping with the dinosaur exhibit? The CAC is in need of volunteers to help with the exhibit during its February and March duration, including docents or floor monitors who assist children with activities, greet visitors or lend a hand in the gift shop. If you're interested in volunteering - as much or as little as you can - please contact us at 236-4054 or info@communityartscenter.net. |

| Lunch with the Arts
Wednesday, February 17 @ Noon
Featuring "Sheldon Tapley: Painting"
Join us February 17 when the CAC welcomes acclaimed artist and Centre College Stodghill Professor of Art Sheldon Tapley for our next installment in the Lunch with the Arts series. Vivid and dynamic, Tapley's realism captures the eye and the imagination. In a feature article of American Artist Magazine, Bill Creevy writes "Tapley masterfully blends the discipline of a hard-earned classical technique with a vision that is thoroughly modern and personal."
Tapley was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela and raised in Europe and the United States, where he earned an MFA in prints and painting at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a BA in art at Grinnell College, Iowa. His still-life works have gained national repute with exhibitions in numerous states and various honors received, including the Al Smith Fellowship awarded by the Kentucky Arts Council in 1998. For most of his life Sheldon has also been an ardent teacher, often drawing and painting alongside his students. He has held an endowed professorship at Centre College since 2002 and in 2005 received the Stodghill Professorship, a permanent endowed chair at the college. Sheldon and his wife, Ann Silver, live in Danville, where they raised their two children. For more on the artist, visit his website www.sheldontapley.com. To reserve a catered box lunch ($10), contact us at least 24 hours in advance by clicking here, or call 859-236-4054. Participants also may bring their own lunch, with $5 admission at the door.
Every third Wednesday of the month, the CAC will present a featured artist who will present and demonstrate his or her work, with time available for discussion with the artist. The monthly arts series will feature everything from literary arts to performing, theatrical and visual arts. image: Self-Portrait with Birdnest, 2009
