October Exhibits

PerryvilleIn honor of Perryville's 147th Battle Commemoration, which took place at the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site earlier this month, the Community Arts Center will feature two collections throughout October highlighting works of art from and inspired by the American Civil War. Included in the themed exhibit is a collection that takes a look at "Kentucky's Colors," featuring various flags of the Civil War - all reminders of Kentucky's role in our nation's most tragic event.

FARMER'S NATIONAL BANK GALLERY
"Perryville: The Battle for Kentucky"
A Collection from the
Perryville Battlefield Museum
Warfare has long been the muse of many artists. They are inspired by its hardships, acts of courage, and even sometimes find simplicity in its brutal hand. In fact, the American Civil War was one of the most painted, photographed and written about wars in American history. Now, a collection on loan from the Perryville Battlefield Museum, as well as items from several local collections, will explore this interest with an exhibit on display through October in the Farmer's National Bank Gallery. The collection will feature paintings and photographs that depict the Battle of Perryville, as this site has long been an inspiration to artists, both local and across the nation. The exhibit also offers photographs taken at the annual reenactment from several local photographers, in addition to items featuring other Civil War personalities and battle depictions.

FARMER'S NATIONAL BANK GALLERY
"Kentucky Colors: Union and Confederate Flags
of the Civil War"
A Traveling Exhibit from the KY Historical Society Civil War Flag
During the Civil War, United States Army regulations required each regiment to carry two flags, also called colors. One was the National Color, patterned with the familiar Stars and Stripes. The other was the Regimental Color, officially required to display an American eagle and a scroll bearing the unit's name. In reality, these banners varied widely in size, color, and design. Confederate flags were even less standardized. Many of these flags are now torn and in tatters, grim reminders of Kentucky's role in our nation's most tragic event. These unique and precious flags are from a collection of the Kentucky Historical Society's Military History Museum. The exhibit, on loan to the Community Arts Center during October, features numerous large color images of surviving Kentucky flags and brief histories of the regiments that bore them.
