FARMER'S NATIONAL BANK GALLERY
A native of Danville, Aaron
Raitiere defines himself as a songwriter who occasionally also gets a creative fix from "putting down some paint, watching it dry, and putting down some more." Throughout September, the artist will return home to share his creative interests with an exhibit that explores his curiousity of painting and textures with mixed media works that "beg you to touch." He'll add a soundtrack to his exhibit with a performance featuring his unique mix of acoustic blues, country and bluegrass songwriting on Thursday, September 17 at 6 p.m.

| Lunch with the Arts
Wednesday, September 16 @ Noon
Please join us Wednesday, September 16 at noon for
the second installment of our new "Lunch with the Arts" series, featuring the artistic staff & cast from DramaCentre's production of "Master Harold... and the Boys". Every third Wednesday of the month, the CAC will present a featured artist who will present and demonstrate his or her work, with time available for discussion with the artist. The monthly arts series will feature everything from literary arts to performing, theatrical and visual arts.
More on the Artists: This pre-performance conversation with the theatre artists will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the DramaCentre production, with actors presenting short scenes and a discussion/Q&A on the rehearsal process. The artistic staff will also provide an overview of DramaCentre's 2009-2010 season, reflecting on the choice of "Master Harold...and the Boys" as part of the season line-up.
Play description:
Written over 25 years ago, Authol Fugard's "Master Harold... and the Boys" received a Drama Desk Award and a Tony nomination for Best Play it 1982 during its first Broadway run. Set in South Africa during the 1950s era of apartheid, it depicts how institutionalized racism can become absorbed by those who live under it. A white South African 17-year-old spends time with two black African workers he has known all his life, and through their conversations on one rainy day we see what unites and divides them. The play's beautiful and haunting dialogue and message of hope also inspire the recognition that there is much work to be done to bring people of different races together.
Director Jane Dewey has worked in theatre for 25 years as an arts educator, director, and actor. Currently Jane is the Director of Arts Education for the Danville Independent Schools and adjuncts with the Centre College Drama Department. For more details on the show and the Drama Department, click here. To reserve a catered box lunch ($10), contact us at least 24 hours in advance by clicking here, or call 859-236-4054. Participants also may bring their own lunch, with a $5 donation at the door. |

Front & Center: Jack Covell, Music Instructor
Jack Covell provides a varied selection of music instruction at the Community Arts Center every week, sharing his passion for music with students one-on-one. As you will gather from his bio, his impressive musical background has equipped him well as an arts educator. With a Bachelors Degree in Music Education, and Masters Degree in Gifted Education, Jack offers 42 years of teaching experience at both high school and college levels and 38 years of recording/studio experience. He is proficient in playing and teaching guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, flute, clarinet, music theory, composition, and improvisation. His list of musical accomplishments is long, including serving as chair and intructor for various college and university musical departments in Florida and Pennsylvania, as well as a college orchestra conductor. Here's what Jack has to say about his experience at the CAC:
How long have you been teaching classes and giving private instruction at the CAC? For the last four years, I have been offering private instruction with a well-rounded curriculum on guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, flute, clarinet, music theory, improvisation, and composition. I have an average of 40 students per week at the Arts Center and students' homes, with students of all ages and levels of ability. My wife Laura and I also perform as a duo at festivals and events when time permits. What do you enjoy most about teaching music? It's very rewarding to watch students progress and reach their musical goals... whether it's for school, to play with a church group, be in a band, or simply play with friends and family. I feel very blessed that my love of music is also my profession, and that I am able to pass my knowledge and experiences on to others. What message would you like to convey about the CAC? The CAC is a great all-around experience for everyone, whether they are a professional who is displaying their craft, a visitor interested in viewing the different mediums of artwork, a tourist doing some shopping, or people who just want to explore the different arts classes. Art is about expressing yourself, and everyone is unique at different levels.
For more information on enrolling in one of Jack's music classes, you may contact him at 859-319-0773.
