August Exhibits
GRAND HALL "Fabric: An Obsession" by Corrie Johnson Singleton
If family is the center of all happiness, then the work of local artist Corrie Lynn Johnson Singleton is perfectly delightful. Growing up in Illinois, Singleton was surrounded by women in her family who were expert seamstresses, able to express their ideas through their fabric creations. But unlike the women in her family, Singleton's artistic abilities strayed from fabric creations to the artist's canvas. Her close-knit connection with her female ancestry compelled Singleton to present her incredible exhibit dedicated to her family, specializing in painting what they valued most: fabric.
FARMER'S NATIONAL BANK GALLERY
"A Life of Art" by Sylvia Tapley
The name Tapley, when mentioned in Danville, is synonymous with extraordinary art. In fact, this holds true internationally. Sylvia Tapley, the mother of renowned artist and Centre College Professor of Art Sheldon Tapley, will display her work throughout August at the Community Arts Center, showcasing pieces from collections she created throughout the world, including Britain, Belgium, Houston, and St. Louis. While Tapley's talent spans a variety of media, including acrylic and collages, her exhibit at the CAC will only showcase a small selection of her work, primarily watercolors and mixed media.
LOCKHART GALLERY "Go Tell it from the Mountains"
by Yolantha Harrison-Pace & Jesse Hutcheson
Yolantha Harrison-Pace has dedicated the past near decade to spreading the word about poverty-and especially hope - in the Haitian mountains. When she met Jesse Hutcheson, a photography student at Christopher Newport University in Virginia, the two found that their artistic goals and life passions instantly meshed, sparking a mission trip to Haiti that would change lives... theirs included. The duo met in 2007 when Hutcheson was assigned to Pace as part of The Mountain Workshop documentary that visited in Danville, and have since collaborated to create a photo-documentary that displays the circumstance the people of Haiti must overcome each day. The pair's recent mission trip to Haiti to shoot the documentary was so emotionally charging that they have designated all proceeds from their exhibit to directly benefit Haitian children. Pace will provide a presentation about this mission trip and related documentary photos during the Artists' Reception, Thursday, August 6.
ARTIST RECEPTION: The CAC will host an opening reception for the August exhibits on Thursday, August 6 from 6-8 p.m. Join us to celebrate and meet this month's featured artists. Yolantha Harrison-Pace also will be on hand at 7 p.m. to provide a special presentation about her recent mission trip to Haiti and the inspiring documentary of photos it produced. The reception is free and open to the public. Are you an artist interested in exhibiting your work at the CAC? Contact Brandon Long at 859-339-1387 for details. |

Lil' Ladies Tea
A perfect blend of Tea & Etiquette...
There were plenty of frilly clothes, petit fours and pinkies raised as we celebrated the art of afternoon tea Saturday, August 1 at the CAC. Nearly seventy ladies and lil' ladies gathered for the sold-out Lil' Ladies Tea, a benefit for the CAC that featured a tea and etiquette presentation and book signing by Shelley Richardson of Elmwood Inn Fine Teas. The fabulous fare was provided by Table 908, followed by a fashion show presented by Kids Alley and Junior's General Store. Portraits by Forever Yours Photography captured the memorable occasion. All proceeds benefitted the CAC. The Community Arts Center would like to thank the generous businesses and individuals who helped make the Lil' Ladies Tea a successful event, including our sponsors: Coldwell Banker VIP Realty, The Clark Law Firm, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Junior's General Store and Kid's Alley. Also, thank you to those who provided services, donated items or volunteered their time - because of your help, it was a wonderful occasion! Front & Center: Nancy Martindale
For nearly three years, Nancy Martindale has served as the Education Coordinator at the CAC. Prior to that she lived in Dayton, TN, and taught GED and Adult Education for ten years. As an artist, Nancy spent thirteen years doing Pennsylvania German style Redware pottery. She was a juried member of the Kentucky and Pennsylvania Craft Guilds. Her primary work since then has been in textiles; currently handmade felt and one-of-a-kind clothing, as well as unusual bead necklaces. She also is an inactive juried member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Here's what Nancy has to say about her experience at the CAC: What about your job at the CAC do you enjoy most?
I enjoy visiting with people who come into the CAC and showing off our beautiful building, sharing information about our classes and exhibits, and generally encouraging visitors to experience the arts.
What you do on a daily basis as the CAC Education Coordinator?
My position involves recruiting new arts instructors, making sure they have what they need in our facility to teach their classes, and coordinating the scheduling of our instructors' use of the building. I also help with administrative duties when needed, including helping people make reservations for private events and receptions in our facility, and managing the gift shop. I also do the daily job of sitting at the reception desk, answering the phones and greeting our visitors. What message would you like to convey about the CAC?
I can't think of a better place to volunteer! There is always something going on here and the most interesting people come and go! Volunteers are always needed and greatly appreciated... Thanks for your many valuable contributions to the CAC, Nancy! |
